Can Your Brand Withstand A Cyber Attack?

    08:00

IBEC, 84-86 Baggot Street Lower, Dublin 2

Did you know the median age of a Cyber attack is 243 days before the experts are called in? In other words, the bad guys have compromised systems on average for nearly a year before they are noticed.

We read and hear stories in the media of massive and sophisticated Cyber attacks. In time the details fade but we tend to remember a brand associated with the attack. Their involvement we cannot always remember, the part they played forgotten but we remember it was something bad and we remember the brand name.

The Irish Software Innovation Network (ISIN) in conjunction with Paul C Dwyer, internationally recognised authority on Cyber threats, will outline the general anatomy of a Cyber attack. The stages, the processes that take place and the common mistakes including the surprises!

He will then discuss the key components and stages in dealing with Cyber related incidents. The key actors, stake holders and players that should be at the table.

This informative, exciting presentation will be followed by an off the record Q&A session which will be moderated by Paul Hearns, editor, TechPro.

    Fujitsu Virtualisation Fast Track

    08:30

    Guinness Storehouse, Dublin

Predictions are that pre-integrated systems are the next major development in enterprise IT, but how do you get the best from them? Virtualisation has become a key layer in the enterprise infrastructure stack, but recent trends have shown that some organisations are struggling to get beyond the initial stages.

What if you could easily specify, buy and deploy infrastructure without the need to plumb it all together yourself? What if you could have a system delivered that is not only pre-certified for major virtualisation providers, but easier to own and operate with a faster time to value?

    Welcome to the Virtualisation Fast-Track!

vShape from Fujitsu is virtualisation infrastructure out-of-the-box. It is pre-designed, pre-integrated and pre-tested with one part number, one price and one support model and warranty.

Customers are already taking advantage of the unique vShape benefits and sharing their feedback with us. Examples include organisations that have reduced their time to production from 3 months to just 3 days – and in doing so dramatically reduced their cost of sale.

vShape includes storage from NetApp, networking from Brocade, back-up and recovery from Symantec, virtualisation software from VMware all running on Fujitsu servers, designed and optimised for virtualisation.

Join us on Wednesday 5 March 2014 in The Guinness Storehouse where you will:

    • Hear key trends in the converged infrastructure space where Chris Ingle, Vice President Consulting for IDC, will provide a roadmap for the next generation of virtualisation, automation and appliance solutions
    • Hear from Dave Ruddle, DCG, a vShape customer, who will give his experiences and thoughts on their vShape implementations.
    • Learn how to avoid the pitfalls ensuring minimum configuration, maximum value in the shortest amount of time.
    • Hear Fujitsu, NetApp, VMware and Symantec give an overview of this best of breed solution.
    • Have the chance to meet and question converged infrastructure experts from global technology organisations including Fujitsu, NetApp, VMware and Symantec.

Make Symposium: Exploring Ideas of Making in Art, Technology and Science

    10am

Stack Theatre, CIT School of Music

MAKE Symposium will look at our relationship to making, to objects, and our awareness through touch of the material world.

MAKE will explore ideas of making in Art and Technology with distinguished speakers from the fields of textile art, ceramics, digital technology, and science.

MAKE will bring low-tech and high-tech makers together to consider the making process itself, how it connects us in our response to the physical world and how this open-ended material dialogue and experimentation is the same no matter if we are closely hand-stitching into cloth, or engaged in hands-on discoveries with the components of open-source electronics.  We hope to find synergies, insights, and inspiration, as these two parallel making worlds meet.

    PROGRAMME:

o       Lesley Millar, MBE, International Curator, Author, and Academic; Professor of Textile Culture; Director, Anglo Textile Japanese Research Centre, University for the Creative Arts, London.

o       Fran Hegarty, MSc, Clinical Teacher in Medicine, Trinity College; Principal Physicist, St. James Hospital, Dublin.

o       Trevor Hogan, CIT CCAD Department of Media Communications Lecturer; PhD researcher at the Bauhaus University, Weimar, Germany.

Cyber Security & Privacy- Getting the Balance Right

Data Solutions will host the annual Secure Computing Forum on Thursday, 13th March, 2014 in the Gibson Hotel, Dublin. This event will bring together high profile international speakers and leading industry experts in what has become one of the largest IT security events in Ireland.

Cybersecurity has moved to the very top of the global agenda. Ongoing debates over state surveillance and the growing number and complexity of cyber attacks, have highlighted the fundamental importance of security in today’s digital age.

As the security industry comes to realise that a targeted attack cannot be entirely prevented, the Secure Computing Forum will explore how Irish businesses can be prepared and examine recent breaches and the lessons learned.

The conference will also delve into the security v’s privacy debate.  Experts will participate in panel discussions to explore if improved protection against hackers comes at the cost of privacy.

One of the speakers taking part in this debate will be Dr Ciarán Mc Mahon, research & development coordinator at the CyberPsychology Research Centre in the Institute of Leadership. His recent research into the areas of social media, political campaigning, and cyberbullying have attracted international interest. Ciarán brings a unique theoretical and philosophical overview of cyberpsychology.

Among the keynote speakers at this year’s Secure Computing Forum  will be Lieutenant Colonel William Hagestad II, US Marine Corps (RET) who advises international intelligence organisations, military flag officers, and multi-national organisations in relation to their internal IT security governance and external security policies.</br>

Michael Schrenk, will provide the second of the keynote presentations. Michael has worked around the world for clients ranging from Governments and Eastern European banks to Disney and the BBC. He is also  a frequent speaker at the DEFCON hacking conference, where he recently gave the talk, “How my Botnet Purchased Millions of Dollars in Cars and Defeated the Russian Hackers”.

Other speakers will include Keith Bird, MD of Check Point Software Technologies, UK and Ireland as well as Amar Singh, a leading industry expert on data privacy, governance, risk management and compliance and current Chair of the ISACA’s Security Group.

Topics that will be discussed at the Secure Computing Forum 2014 include:

Requirements gathering: What could go wrong?

    6-7pm

ICS, 87-89 Pembroke Road, Dublin 4

Gathering or eliciting requirements is one of the most crucial parts of a development life cycle – it is the realm of the business analyst. Many companies spend a considerable amount of resources and time on training to get this right. The International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA) has created the business analysis body of knowledge (BABOK) to map out the best methodologies and techniques for eliciting requirements according to current practices. There is an increased awareness and interest in certification in business analysis since BABOK introduced certification in 2006. Despite this, many requirements are not elicited correctly. This leads to many difficulties later on in the development life cycle.

In this Business Analysts Association of Ireland (BAAI) seminar, Dr Eugene O’Loughlin takes a look at the common mistakes that are made during the Requirements Gathering process, and investigates strategies for avoiding these pitfalls and to do an effective job in business analysis.

    • 15:30 – 17:15 Parallel Breakout SIGs: Tracks A, B and C
Track A | Agility in the Enterprise
Application delivery is accelerating but delivering change continuously and fast is risky. Agile adoption is widespread
but we’re simply moving the bottleneck. This breakout session will give attendees the opportunity to discuss
whether they have adopted Agile and whether it is moving the needle in their organizations.

Track B | Mobility in the Enterprise
The era of mobility and mobile applications demands rapid development and delivery of high-quality solutions. In order
to keep up with the speed of mobile application development and testing, testing teams must have solutions that enable
automation of functional testing on real devices. Join the discussion on Mobility in the Enterprise to discuss issues
about mobile application requirements such as unique performance profiles making accurate performance testing
      challenging and elusive.

      Track C | Performance Testing
Performance testing is a given in most organizations, enabling them to build test and deliver applications faster,
with higher quality and that scale to any level. But new technologies and methodologies, including cloud, mobile
and continuous testing are changing the game. Join this dedicated session to discuss the myriad issues surrounding
performance testing. The End User Experience has never been so importance as we try and attract and retain new
customers. Performance Testing is no longer as an after-though, but has to be integral to any application release.

    ICS: Giving and receiving feedback

    6-7pm

ICS, 87-89 Pembroke Road, Dublin 4

Communication skills are the number one skills of an effective manager. Giving and receiving feedback challenges most managers and in many cases managers say they are too busy to give quality feedback.
    When you give feedback:

    • Team members know where they stand
    • Performance improves
    • Confidence improves

Managers who do not give feedback are not managing – it is that simple. Ask yourself the following:

    • To what extent are you happy with the quality of the feedback you give?
    • Would you team’s performance improve if you improved your skills in giving and receiving feedback?

This session will provide you with a simple and practical technique to help you step up to having challenging conversations that result in enhanced team relationships.

    Speaker – Anna Rowan

Anna Rowan is an occupational psychologist with 20 years experience in business training and coaching. Anna began her career in training and development while working in Aer Lingus. In 2002 she began work as an independent consultant and has been designing and delivering bespoke training and development interventions to organisations across the private, public and not for profit sector. Anna’s training style is very hands-on and practical.

TechFire 10; CAN YOU MANAGE ALL YOUR CLOUDS FROM ONE PLATFORM?

April 30th – Gibson Hotel, Dublin

May 1st – Rochestown Park Hotel, Cork

TechFire 10, on successive days in Dublin and Cork at the end of April, will address one of the biggest Burning Questions in current IT practice: Can you manage all your clouds from one platform?

Organisations deploying cloud without foresight often find themselves tangled in fragmented, confusing and heavily siloed data infrastructures. Rather than move their data into the cloud, they realise that they have pushed it onto several disjointed clouds, ironically intensifying the very challenges they have invested so much time and resources to mitigate.

A new approach is the “unbound cloud” where an aligned, flexible, hybrid architecture allows IT to leverage its role as broker of services to full strategic advantage. Some infrastructures are developed and managed on the premises, some are outsourced to a service provider and some are rented from a hyperscaler, such as Amazon or Microsoft.

Moving any workload to the public cloud involves careful planning and migration.  Achieving portability of workloads across public clouds along with the ability to bring workloads back in-house are also of paramount importance.

The unbound cloud empowers the best choice of IT environment for the business process, without compromising security, policy management, data protection, availability or consistency.

For IT today, this consistency without compromise is critical. The lack of a long-term strategy and architecture leads to the creation of fragmented and chaotic data environments that can be difficult — and costly — to unravel.

NetApp and Cisco together with partner Appliance Technology, will describe how the unbound cloud can take your organisation safely into the new era of unbound cloud.

    Future Bank Summit

    8am – 4.40pm

    Croke Park, Dublin

The advancement of omni-channel banking means that Banks must evolve and advance their processes in order to both standardize and improve the customer experience. In 2014, key drivers in the future roadmap of banking and the financial services sector will embrace social media and mobile technology and consolidate IT and operations. Increasingly tech-savvy customers demand control, transparency and access to their finances anywhere, anytime. And, to meet this challenge banks are having to come up with new ways of operating and products and services that deliver value, while simultaneously meeting regulatory requirements and combating new risks.

User-friendly online services and 24/7 access is now the norm, so a customer-centric focus for financial organisations will be a key factor in maintaining a competitive edge. Agile Estimation and Planning workshop

    09:00

    TBC

One of the most important aspects of agile development training is estimating and planning. Yes, these are important, even for agile software development. Although agile is a fluid and iterative process, that doesn’t mean that planning doesn’t have a place in its programming and project management.

Despite the many worthless plans that we’ve all seen—which may make us want to skip planning altogether—this Agile Estimating and Planning Training will demonstrate that it’s possible to create accurate project plans useful for programming testing—and projecting forward from 6-9 months. Our Agile Estimating and Planning Training will teach you how to create practical, useful and reliable plans for your software development projects.

If your crew view planning as something to be avoided, or your organization uses plans as something to hold against development crew, this popular estimating and planning course can help your company break both of those attitudes and cycles.

Attendees will leave with a solid understanding and experience of agile release and iteration planning. The course also looks at various approaches to estimating including unit-less points and ideal time. The class will present four specific techniques for deriving reliable estimates, including how to use the popular Planning Card® technique and other techniques that dramatically improve a project’s chances of on-time completion.

By using this approach to estimating, crew learn to answer the ever-challenging questions that plague every development crew: “When will we be done?” and “How soon can we have all of these features?”

PMPs: This course counts for 7.5 Professional Development Units (PDUs).

SoftTest Ireland BDD Workshop – Delivering business value through communication and collaboration

    14:00

Irish Computer Society, 87-89 Pembroke Rd, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4

Having worked with agile teams for years and having used a flavour or another of BDD almost since it was first introduced in 2006, like many others, I totally misunderstood it, used it badly and made a mess of it for a good while.

Mistake after mistake, I learned a lot of things and today I believe I have developed a decent approach that I continuously try to improve. Through these years of many failures and some success one thing clearly emerged and it is I believe the true value of BDD.

BDD is about communication, collaboration and delivering business value. It’s based on this principle that we built our workshop.

Improved communication and close collaboration helps defects prevention, systems built with BDD are built right the first time.

One of the nice side effects of BDD is the creation of an automated regression suite that covers all areas of the deliverable allowing testers not to waste time on manual regression testing and focus on a more in depth exploration of the systems

If you want to know how your team can deliver business value by producing clear and maintainable code, come to our workshop!

This workshop is for testers, developers, business analysts, managers and product owners

About the Presenters: Augusto Evangelisti is a software development professional, blogger, foosball player with great interest in people, software quality, agile and lean practices. He enjoys golfing, eating, learning and helping agile teams exceed customer expectations while having fun. Over 20 years in the industry and still loving it.

Mary Walshe helps teams deliver successful solutions to business problems and plays a major role in striving for a kaizen culture in these teams. Mary was the driving force behind the introduction of Acceptance Test Driven Development in her department.

She has been working in the industry for 4 years and currently she works on a team in Paddy Power as an agile tester. Her team is using Kanban to help them measure their experiments and in order to continually improve. In her spare time Mary runs adventure races, mountain bikes and just recently found a new love for skiing.

Resistance is futile! The cloud is here. The good news is that it is not something to be feared by IT pros. There is a lot of change, but change can be good. At this event we will be exploring two kinds of cloud that are on offer from Microsoft. On June 19th we will explore Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) in the Microsoft Cloud OS. The Cloud OS is a hybrid cloud that includes on-premise virtualization & private cloud. Microsoft Azure provides the public cloud element, integrated tightly with the private & on-premise infrastructure. On June 19thwe will have deep dive “how to” sessions that cover content on:

    • New storage solutions in Windows Server 2012 R2
    • Solving challenges and limitations of legacy storage technologies
    • Service automation
    • Flexible IT
    • Building your very own Azure IaaS cloud for private use or public hosting
    • Integrating Azure into your private on-premise network and infrastructure

On June 20th we will move into the world of Software-as-a-Service where we make use of already-deploy software solutions that Microsoft offers. We dive into Office 365, device management with Windows Intune, and PowerBI for Office 365. The latter session is guaranteed to be quite entertaining and educational!

    • Communications using Office 365 Exchange & Lync
    • Managing client devices using Windows Intune
    • Bring-your-own-device (BYOD) and mobile device management (MDM)

    ICS: Application Modernisation

    6-8pm

ICS, 87-89 Pembroke Road, Dublin 4

Its Time for Semi-Automated Processes to Grow Up.

In the past many organisations used the tools they had at hand to automate their business processes. Now that they have stabilised and become critical to running the business, its time to fully automate and industrialise them.

When starting out the business used their Office productivity suites including Access and Excel. Now they are ready to be completely re-architected or refactored using Enterprise reporting tools and/or become turnkey .NET applications.

    Migrating these applications looks easy at first glance but, when you look under the covers you usually find a different story;

    • Business rules are in peoples heads or embedded in the productivity tools
    • Limited documentation
    • Complex workflows
    • Handovers with separation of duties required for compliance
    • Traceability moving from step to step

Even with all these challenges, the conversion project team along with the sponsor request more functionality in the new solution.

If you are interested in getting tips and techniques in solving these challenges then come along to listen to David Reichental and Dan Galvan on Thursday 24th April.

    Speaker: David Reichental

    Speaker: Dan Galavan

Dan Galavan is a Business Intelligence Consultant specializing in solutions delivery using mainly the Microsoft BI Stack.

Working in consultancy since 1999, Dan has modernized applications and processes across a variety of industries for example Banking, Investment, CRM, Social Protection, and Telecoms.

He has worked as a consultant in Ireland, the U.S. and Germany. On St. Patrick’s Day 2003 Dan came face to face with Microsoft SQL Server for the first time (it’s not a national holiday in Germany for some reason). He began using computers in the heady days of the Commodore 64 with a mix of gaming and dabbling in Basic.

Dan is a Business Intelligence Consultant for BearingPoint.

Re-Writing the Rule Book on Knowledge Management

    8.30-10.30

    Microsoft Head Offices, Sandyford, Dublin

Managing knowledge in a business has always been tough but recently it’s got a lot tougher.  The amount of information available has sky rocketed and so too have the formats, places and headspaces that it comes in.  Complexity around how we gather, organise and effectively use what we have got has magnified to the point where most of us are scratching our heads trying to figure out what to do.

Storm has teamed up with Paul Culmsee  – Australian based information management strategist, SharePoint guru, award winning author to run a seminar in September.

Key issues on the agenda are:

    – Avoiding the ‘what happens when Jeff leaves’ brain drain crisis
    – Tapping in to ‘what’s in the head’ and turning it into usable assets for the business
    – Bringing a halt to the revolving cycle of ‘re-inventing the same wheel’
    – Stopping the nonsensical repetition of costly mistakes

What we will talk about are new approaches, techniques and tools that can be used within your organisation to help better leverage your existing knowledge stores and intellectual capital all using SharePoint.

1-Day Agile Estimating and Planning Training in Ireland

    08:00

    Dublin

The class will present four specific techniques for deriving reliable estimates, including how to use the popular Planning Card technique and other techniques that dramatically improve a project’s chances of on-time completion.

By using this approach to estimating, crew learn to answer the ever-challenging questions that plague every development crew: “When will we be done?” and “How soon can we have all of these features?”

PMPs: This course counts for 7.5 Professional Development Units (PDUs).

    You Will Learn

    • How to create an accurate and useful project plan
    • The importance of estimating size and deriving duration
    • The differences between story points and ideal time
    • The advantages of an abstract measure of size
    • Techniques for creating estimates
    • When and how to re-estimate
    • How and when to perform release and iteration planning
    • Tips for communicating about estimates and plans

    What You Get

    • High quality training from an industry expert
    • A light breakfast buffet, a lunch, an afternoon snack, and continuously replenished drinks

    RECOSI conference

Royal Marine Hote, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin

Electrical refurbishment and reuse company RECOSI (Regional and European Co-Operative for Social Industry), in partnership with the International Computer Refurbisher Summit (ICRS), is to host Europe’s first conference of computer refurbishers and resellers October 29-30th in the Royal Marine Hotel in Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin.

Sponsored by Microsoft, the conference brings together IT and electronic refurbishers and resellers from across Europe and the U.S. to showcase new developments and examples of best practices in this fledgling but burgeoning industry and to explore the many exciting challenges and opportunities that Ireland and Europe face as consumption of devices and equipment continues to rise and the issue of how to dispose of or reuse them safely and economically becomes more pressing.  In this regard, conference host RECOSI is leading the way as a not-for profit organisation that helps social enterprises commercialise their activity in the refurbishment and reuse of such equipment and, in the process, is creating job opportunities across Europe, including in Ireland, where it has set up an office in Naas, Co. Kildare.

In its approach to this problem, RECOSI has adopted an unconventional commercial model that brings together specialist companies such as Microsoft, ICRS and others into partnership with social enterprises that refurbish, resell or donate used, licensed and guaranteed electrical items that would otherwise end up as Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE).  In recognition of public concerns over misuse of data, RECOSI has also engaged with Tabernus, the global leader in proven certified data erasure, to ensure that all software and data is securely wiped from each device.

ICS IT Executive Focus: Developing an IT Cost Optimisation Programme

    9.30am – 1pm

    Bewley’s Hotel, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4

Organisations rely heavily on Information Technology. IT is now typically one of the largest line items on the CAPEX and OPEX budgets. Despite IT costs attracting major attention within most organisations, few have real IT cost management structures.

This workshop will introduce an IT Cost Optimisation framework, along with tools and techniques to identify where each organisation should focus its efforts to optimise IT costs. Subsequent workshops will drill down into further detail on individual topics.

The workshop is intended to be interactive and participants are encouraged to participate in the context of their own organisation in terms of what may and may not be applicable. Given the interactive nature of the workshop a maximum of 12 to 15 participants is recommended.

    Discovery Science Festival, Cork

Grab your capes and utility belts and fly to Cork as one of the biggest events in the Irish Science calendar gets underway.  In its 10th year, Discovery Science Festival, run in partnership with Science Week Ireland, features a line-up of events at City Hall which is set to excite attendees ‘to infinity and beyond’! This year’s theme, The Power of Science, will also give students between the ages of 8 and 17 years old the chance to channel their inner Superhero through various school outreach programmes.

The Festival begins with the outreach program touring schools around Cork City and County from 10 to 21 November, bringing science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) workshops and shows right into the classroom.

Gather your family of ‘Incredibles’ and head to Festival HQ (City Hall, Cork) where a nonstop program of interactive exhibits and workshops will entertain and educate families and students alike. Open to the general public on Saturday and Sunday, 15 November from 2 to 6pm, and exclusively to school groups on Monday and Tuesday 17 and 18 November, City Hall will showcase the best Cork has to offer in terms of education, research and business – sure to get your spider-senses tingling!

The Festival is introducing some brand new events and displays this year for older students. Transition Year and 5th year’s will learn from ‘Stellar Careers’, a seminar featuring ex NASA astronaut Greg Johnson and other speakers with talks on careers, sensors and space, accompanied by an incredible 3D show.

Also – the Cork Education and Training Board’s mimic facility in Carrigaline will provide a Pharmaceutical manufacturing tour on the Life Sciences Sector, where experts will advise on types of employment opportunities in this sector in Cork.

‘This is not a Game’ is another special event for older students, inviting entrants to create a video game to save the world oceans as part of a competition with the American Embassy in Ireland. An initiative Aquaman would be proud of no doubt!  Hosted by UCC’s Insight Centre, this happens on Saturday 15th.

This year, STEM becomes STEAM at Discovery, by including some artistic angles to the traditional STEM mix, underlining how both scientific exploration and the creative process require creativity and ‘outside the box’ thinking.  Stop by Rory Gallagher Plaza on Wednesday 12th to view the power of perception in our vertiginous 3D art installation, or come MAKE something in our eTextiles pop-up shop.

“Discovery Science has the most-cutting edge organisations on board who come up with fun experiments every year, helping to make high-level research and development more accessible for young people.  These contributors include: Cork City Council, UCC, CIT, Tyndall National Institute, Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre (APC), Lifetime Lab, Fota Wildlife Park, An Garda Síochána, Defence Forces, Cork Chamber, Engineers Ireland and Cork Electronics Industry Association among others.  Without their support, the Festival would not be where it is today.” said Marcela Whelan Kelly, Festival Co-Ordinator.

Whether it’s discovering which superhero you are, having hair-raising fun with static electricity, or zapping the microbes from deep inside the human gut, Discovery Science Festival is sure to get a ‘positive reaction’ from young people as their eyes are opened to the fun and amazing secrets unlocked by the study of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.

The Festival will be running competitions through their Facebook Page and website this year, where Science (and arts-and-crafts) enthusiasts can collect their own team of Science Superheroes or create their own – so be sure to keep an eye out.   www.discoverysciencefestival.ie ;www.facebook.com/discovery.science.festival

itSMF Event: Why ITSM is not like the movies

    9-11am

ICS, 87-89 Pembroke Road, Dublin 4

Most of us watch TV. We know it isn’t real life, but for many, it affects our expectations of real life.

This talk looks at some of the ways screen entertainment affects expectations of service in real life and especially the goals, targets and measurements those expectations generate.

For example, we see mostly extremes on TV – the best, fastest etc. That leads us to believe things that don’t apply in everyday life:

Risks usually succeed and innovation is always rewarded

    • Something exciting and/or unexpected happens every episode
    • Every team has at least one (slightly eccentric) genius in it, the kind of person that can break through top secret government firewalls with a second hand mobile phone

For most of us, that isn’t the case delivering our real services.

    There are other lessons too:

    • The adoption of technology can quickly make a plot illogical – or a previously accepted best practice inappropriate
    • People trust and believe the movie version more than the actual history.

They also seem to believe whatever a computer tells them, without the need for any further conviction than the word ‘technology’.

Perhaps the best and most important lesson we can learn though is a positive one. We should deliver what is necessary, not the supplier’s idea of perfection – this one is best explained in the context of teleportation.

    Speaker: Ivor Macfarlane

Ivor Macfarlane is well known in the IT Service Management community, having been actively involved with writing, interpreting and applying best practice since 1989.

Involved in service management before seeing any IT, and with formal process improvement even longer – since 1978, he remains proud of his start as a user, something he believes a major advantage in really understanding service management. His authoring credits include ITIL versions 1,2 and 3 as well as ISO/IEC20000, itSMF and ITSM Library publications. He has been continuously active within itSMF since 1994 in many roles for itSMF UK and internationally and an ITIL examiner since 1991.

After a wide ranging career in government employ that included forestry and prisons,  from 1999 Ivor worked as an IT Service Management Consultant and Trainer, delivering training and seminars in every continent (except Antarctica). A frequent speaker at events worldwide, he has spoken for itSMF in 35 countries to date.

Ivor joined IBM in June 2007, where he supports IBM’s range of IT Service management deliverables, and evangelises about service management. Never frightened to express his own opinions, you can find his material at http://shiftmediainc.com/category/opinion/life-as-i-know-it/ and at http://servicemanagement360.com/author/ivor-mcfarlane
