ISIN breakfast seminar: Trustworthiness in the cloud
8-10.30am
Ibec 84-86 Lower Baggot Street, Dublin 2
Cloud computing is promoted as an efficient, low cost and agile alternative to the traditional on premise client-server IT paradigm, however end users continue to have two main concerns that are slowing adoption of, and the building of trust in, Cloud Computing. These concerns centre around the loss of control the end user has over their data and their dependence on their chosen cloud service supplier.
To help build trust and dependability in cloud computing, IC4 is developing a ‘trustworthy cloud computing diagnostic framework’, which is designed to provide insight into the trustworthiness of cloud services and to enable organisations to review Cloud services in the context of communicating trust. The framework is designed to deliver a trust-based profile across all aspects of a cloud service and to guide cloud service providers on key areas for investment to improve or differentiate cloud services based on trust.

TechFire: Can your cloud compete with the Web giants?
8-10am
Double Tree by Hilton, Burlington Road, Dublin
The Web giants can design their own servers, build architectures that rival space agencies and serve billions of users daily. They get complaints if services run slowly — let alone fail.
But these Web giants have near-endless resources, with armies of engineers to deliver these service levels. How can your organisation hope to develop a data centre that can rival such services?
Come to this TechFire briefing and hear Owen Wynne, contracts/engineering manager at eircom, discussing his experience developing eircom’s business-critical infrastructure including data centres.
Experts from Schneider Electric and E-TEC international will present the latest thinking on data centre design, covering techniques such as high-density provisioning, modular design and hot aisle containment. They will outline how indigenous organisations can achieve excellence in design, implementation and operation of data centres, irrespective of outright scale, to ensure that whatever is kept ‘on-premise’ performs as if it were hosted by a Web giant.
Paul Hearns will chair a Q&A session from delegates following his interview.

TechFire: How free is free cooling?
8-10.30am
The Gibson Hotel, Dublin
A lot has been said about Ireland’s climate being perfect for free cooling of data centres, with all the savings in cooling costs that brings, as well as being kinder to the environment.
But is this true? How hard is it to achieve real free cooling? What are the inhibitors, and is it really suitable for all?
With major developments in recent years regarding safe operating temperatures in data centres, the need for cooling the air coming into data centres has arguably been significantly reduced. In light of this, can chillers simply be turned off, effectively achieving the same thing?
TechFire, in association with Schneider Electric, will examine data centre cooling and power management in Ireland, to see where real savings and efficiencies can be achieved, asking where and how free cooling can be employed, and if it isn’t right for you, exploring the practical alternatives. The morning session will cover the various cooling architectures and contributory factors to improve cooling efficiency.

Do you have 21st century technology but a 20th century corporate structure? Are you equipped to attract, develop and retain digital talent? Do you know what it takes to lead in an era of digital transformation?
According to the Harvey Nash 2015 CIO Survey, digital innovation is dominating the agenda of technology leaders, but many companies are struggling to manage it. The pace of digital and the race to innovate has left many organisations lacking an enterprise-wide digital strategy and desperately seeking to acquire the right skills and talent.
This Autumn’s IVI (Innovation Value Institute) Summit focuses on the key priority of developing IT management skills and organisational capabilities for today’s digital organisations. The most important component to optimising a company’s capability in leveraging its technology investments is its people. Skills and talent are in short supply as mobile, social and analytical tools permeate the length and breadth of every function across the organisation. Missing digital skills are a key hurdle to digital business transformation.
The 2015 Summit will hear best practice from top companies including the many natioanl and international organisations the IVI has worked with in researching and delivering increased capability to expand and develop this priority area. The IVI will also launch a major research finding at the conference on the relationship between increased capability in managing technology and the level and type of skills that are needed by the organisation.
Key Agenda Topics Include:
•Connected, Inclusive & Creative: Towards Ireland’s Digital Future delivered by Ireland’s Digital Champion, Lord David Puttnam
•Finding & building the talent to get there – hiring, integrating, nurturing & developing talent in leading the drive to digital
•New thinking & approaches to talent management
•The European perspective: E-skills Manifesto: Joining forces & working together
•Case Study: IVI IT Capability Management Framework for success in talent management
•The digital talent challenge: How disruptive digital technologies are creating new working environments & demanding new skills forcing companies to adjust and innovate. What talent challenges do organisations face as they adopt technology-driven business models?
•Diversity and why it matters
•Digital transformation through e-Leadership: Perspectives of the CIO
•The 3 killer capabilities that define successful digital leadership
•Where will the digital leaders come from? How can a business be confident it has the right talent & leadership models in place to deliver its future strategy?Who Should Attend?
This international conference is aimed at all business and IT professionals involved in technology, innovation, HR and skills management. The IVI annual Autumn Summit attracts senior corporate and IT decision-makers in Ireland and internationally. National eHealth Summit
Carton House, Co Kildare
Our healthcare system is one of the most technology dependent parts of our economy and yet, one of the most primitive.
It is over 18 months since the publication of the National eHealth Strategy. But, while the framework may now be in place, changing organisational culture and the habits of a lifetime can be a long and laborious task. So, what has been the reaction and progress on the ground? Do our health professionals still very much rely on the old pen and clipboard or are they successfully and efficiently moving into the digital age?
The inaugural National eHealth Summit in 2014 focused on the framework, but this year, we focus on adoption i.e. are the key stakeholders buying in to the National eHealth Strategy and moving away from paper based to technology based solutions? And, if not, why not? And, if not, how can we convince them of the merits of making the transition?
The 2014 Inaugural National eHealth Summit provided a unique forum that brought together the main stakeholders of the ehealth ecosystem to discuss and debate the critical issues in making Ireland’s National eHealth Strategy a reality. Enthusiastically received by the industry, feedback was overwhelmingly positive. And as organisers, iQuest and The Sunday Business Post, wish to grow and develop the summit this year to provide attendees with a fully comprehensive, educational and enriching conference experience.
2014 Attendees included delegates from:
Department of Health, The Beacon Hospital, Health Service Executive, Servisource Healthcare, Performation Ireland & UK, Rotunda Hospital, Trinity College Dublin, Kefron, VHI Healthcare, Cerner Ireland, Temple St. Children’s University Hospital, Oracle, AIB Corporate Banking, Barrington’s Hospital, Uniphar Group, Abbey Healthcare, i360 Medical, Age Friendly Ireland, National Epilepsy Programme, Wincanton Records Management, Accenture, Deloitte & Touche, GlaxoSmithKline, Bon Secours Health System, Grant Thornton, Medray Imaging Systems, Northgate Public Services, McKesson, National Disability Authority, Business Information Systems, Enterprise Ireland, National Ambulance Service, NUIG, Ace Health, Health & Social Care Board Northern Ireland, Gartner, Irish Blood Transfusion Service, McLernon Computers, Mater Private Hospital, Janssen, Microsoft Ireland, Bearing Point, AssessPatients.com, Irish College of General Practitioners, Kainos, TEKenable, Helix Heal th and Boehringer Ingelheim Ireland……..If you work in health IT or have a close interest in the use of information in healthcare, eHealth 2015 is a must-go event for you. Big Data Case Studies: AIB, recommenders at scale, data catalogs
6pm
AIB Bankcentre, 41 Serpentine Ave, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4
HUG Ireland next meetup will be at AIB Bank Centre, Ballsbridge on 6 October.
Ther agenda is as follows:
Hadoop and BIG Data at Allied Irish Banks
Allied Irish Banks (AIB) is reinventing itself as a streamlined, technology-led bank that delivers consistently great service. They are in the process of complementing their large-scale batch data analysis with large-scale, real-time data analysis. With new channels, data types, sources and technologies, AIB was challenged to bring these all together to meet the needs of today’s customers. While deploying a tag management system across their websites, AIB investigated Big Data technologies through research and workshops. We have currently deployed Hadoop to complement our data warehouse and are beginning proof of concepts on near real time streaming solutions such as IBM Infosphere Streams and Spark Streaming.
Recommenders at Scale
Dr Eoin Hurrell, data research scientist
Recommenders are hugely valuable parts of many online businesses, leading customers to more interesting products. They are also some of the most information-hungry algorithms. This talk will explore recommendation and how to do it at scale, touching on a few options in the Hadoop ecosystem, and their use in the field. It will explore the use of Spark’s Python bindings to generate recommendations, and how this can be done using AWS.
Data Catalogs
Uli Bethke, Sonra
The advent of the data lake and data discovery has democratized the access to enterprise data. But that won’t help if analysts can’t find the right data. Data Catalogs can solve this problem. The presentation will cover the various concepts and provide a walkthrough of one of the cataloging tools.
This event will be streamed live via Twitter (#HUGUseCase) for followers of sonra_io and available openly on Social Media from HUG Ireland no later then two weeks from the event.

Resolving 4G Data Challenges in Ireland
Citywest Hotel, Saggart, Co. Dublin
A major challenge facing Irish telcos and mobile operators is analysing and locating the source of radio frequency (RF) interference. This problem has been further emphasised by the recent rollout of 4G, increased use of mobile data, higher data speeds and more demanding customer expectations. Essentially, operators are dealing with increased levels of interference at a time when consumers expect maximum quality.
Data Edge will host a free seminar examining the different types of interference most commonly experienced by operators in Ireland, their causes, and how to locate and resolve them.
Using examples of some of the best practices and tools used in other countries where 4G rollouts are more advanced, industry experts will demonstrate best-in-class methods to solve interference issues and improve mobile data quality.
The seminar will also highlight forthcoming EU regulations, which will update the health and safety rules regarding Electromagnetic Field (EMF) exposure for workers. Jeff Hinsley of Narda Safety Test Solutions, a global leader in the development and production of measuring EMF instruments, will lead this part of the workshop and ensure delegates are fully aware of what their organisations need to do to prepare for this new regulation.
Delegates will also receive an introduction to Passive InterModulation (PIM), a common but difficult to pinpoint source of RF Interference that can degrade the quality of wireless communication systems and to which 4G is especially sensitive.
The seminar will be followed by a Q&A and delegates will have the opportunity to network with industry peers and speakers. There will also be a complimentary lunch.
To register for the free workshop, visit http://dataedge.ie/rf-safety-rf-interference-workshop-october-13th-2015-dublin/
Delegates have the option to request to be part of the widely regarded Anritsu Certified Site Master Training class. This class is an intense two-day instructor led training course focusing on RF line sweep theory, technology and the application of best practices when using the Site Master test unit for sweeping RF systems.

The iconic and elegant wind turbine on campus at Dundalk Institute of Technology celebrates 10 years of turning this year.
To mark the occasion, members of the public from near and far are invited to come to visit the turbine and learn more about how it works.

The total cost of the installation was €1.127 million, which included a vital capital grant of 40% from the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland.
The energy generated by the turbine saves DkIT €130,000 per annum and so the capital investment was paid back in less than nine years.

Tackling the “P” in Project Management
8.30 – 11.30am
Microsoft Office, Building 2 (EPDC-2) South County Business Park, Leopardstown
Keynote speaker: Brian Cody.
Brian Cody, Kilkenny hurling manager, is certainly one of Ireland’s great winners – ask him what makes him so and he’ll tell you it’s people with a capital P.
For those of us managing projects there are many ‘Ps’ – for some people it’s planning, for others process, for us at Storm it’s Project Online and if we are all honest sometimes the “P” simply stands for painful!
Project management can be tough and it’s certainly very stressful at times but that doesn’t mean you can’t win.
So we invite you to join us to hear three of the best share their experiences and approaches to tackling and winning their P in project management.
Agenda:
08.30am Registration and Breakfast

Storm, Spark Streaming. Prometheus Monitoring. Spark/Akka for Data Generation
6-8.30pm
Accenture, 1 Grand Canal Square, Silicon Docks, Dublin 2
HUG Ireland has the pleasure of announcing its final event of 2015, which is hosted by Accenture, where we will enjoy three great talks from accomplished Academics and Industry Practitioners. On the agenda is a fine blend of experience sharing by Wu on Storm/Spark Streaming, Brian on network and cluster monitoring with Prometheus along with Floran on using Spark, Akka and Kafka to build a country level telecoms data synthesis platform for real time analytics.
Agenda:
Real time analytics with Storm and Spark Streaming by Guangyu Wu, Post Doctoral Researcher with CeADAR
High volume, high velocity streaming data is now commonplace in many industries and real-time analytics over these types of live data streams is gaining increased interest. Apache Spark Streaming and Apache Storm are distributed stream processing frameworks which can be applied for these tasks. CeADAR (Centre for Applied Data Analytics Research) has developed several industrial research projects using Spark and Storm, such as fraud detection in financial transactions and spam identification in SMS traffic which showcase these frameworks.Monitoring Hadoop et al with Prometheus by Brian Brazil, Founder of Robust Perception
The Prometheus monitoring system was publicly announced at the start of this year, and offers a new perspective on gaining insight into and managing your systems. In this talk we shall take a look at the Prometheus perspective on monitoring and alerting on batch jobs such as those common in Hadoop. These techniques will let you reduce email spam (aka notifications), get actionable alerts and help you sleep better at night.Building a country-scale Telecom simulator using Akka, Spark and Kafka by Floran Hachez
Real Impact Analytics, creates products which capture the value in telecom data. To build great products, we need data to benchmark, test and stress test our solutions, but in the telecom industry, data are private and hard to get. A solution is to simulate a real world telecommunication provider at a country-scale. Our approach is to “simulator simulate” a network of millions of users in order to generate synthetic data. Let’s learn more about Akka and see how we built such a simulator using Akka, Spark and Kafka. The event hashtag is #HUGIreland.

Webinar : SQL Server 2005 – End of life or lease of life
11am
Online
Microsoft’s support for SQL server 2005 ends in April 2016.
For most of us the time has come to start getting our heads around what this means to our business and what we need to do about it.
Some businesses’ view end-of-life support as a headache – something that means they have to upgrade or replace hardware and software with minimal or no return on investment.
Others see it, as we do, as a lease of life – a perfect opportunity to migrate, evolve and modernize.
Regardless of what your school of thought is you need to know what your options are and that’s where we can help. Join us for our upcoming webinar:-
