Improve Blended and Online Teaching
A new version of the Learn2Analyse University-Industry Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) on Educational Data Literacy is being offered by the Learn2Analyse Consortium.
In the wake of the Covid-19 global pandemic, emergency remote teaching has become the new reality for school education around the world. As a result, educational data, that is the rich data footprint that students generate through their interactions in digital learning environments, has increased exponentially. This unprecedented crisis has brought to the forefront the urgent demand for Educational Data Analytics (EDA) as a key enabler to seize the opportunity, through the use of educational data generated during teaching and learning (including assessment), to better support individual learners in technology-supported remote teaching. Furthermore, online learning environments and education data-driven practice and assessment raise challenges such as ethical issues and implications, especially in terms of privacy, security of data and informed consent that should be addressed via transparent and well-defined ethical policies and codes of practices.

MSc In Blockchain – Distributed Ledger Technologies
Online
Blockchain is a rapidly growing technology with the potential to disrupt traditional practices across a wide range of industries. The lack of technical Blockchain skills is of national and international concern as it is a significant inhibitor to Blockchain adoption in companies across key industries including manufacturing, supply-chain, health, food, finance and the public sector.
With its roots in Bitcoin and crypto currencies, Blockchain technology provides a distributed non-repudiable ledger. It works on decentralised platforms and offers significant advantages for business operations in terms of transparency, elimination of third parties, cost reduction, micropayments, cryptographic security, and permanent transactions. Blockchain enhances the speed and transparency of transactions along complex supply chains while reducing costs. It optimises back and middle business processes and transactions, augmenting security, reporting and regulatory and compliance profiles.
IDA Ireland’s Blockchain strategy aims to promote Ireland as a European location for Blockchain developments and in 2018, the Minister for Finance published a discussion paper examining the potential of virtual currencies and Blockchain technology. Working with Blockchain Ireland, the Technology Ireland ICT Skillnet has identified the skills gap for software developers with the requisite Blockchain knowledge and development skills and is co-funding this new MSc as a direct response to this need.

Executive Guide to AI in 60 Minutes
Online
The first in a series of webinars will have a panel of experts explain how AI is powering business applications to deliver a transformation in the creation and delivery of new services.
A recent survey from the European Union gauging the use of technologies based on artificial intelligence found that awareness of AI within the business environment is now almost universal, however levels of adoption are low while those projects which lead to impact are lower again. Some organisations suffer from what McKinsey refers to as ‘pilot purgatory’, proof of concepts that never reach production.
The purpose of this series of webinars – The Power of Applied Intelligence – is to provide no-nonsense, practical and pragmatic advice to business leaders, to improve their understanding of artificial intelligence, demonstrate where the growth markets exist, where investment is taking place, the sectors of interest and the applications which are delivering bottom-line return on investment.

Where to now? The uncertain future of UK Data Protection Laws
12pm
Online
The Irish Computer Society (ICS) will host a free webinar titled ‘Where to now? The uncertain future of UK Data Protection Laws’ this Wednesday 10 November at 12pm. Speaking at the event is Jared Browne, head of data privacy, Fexco Group.
Since 28 June 2021, the UK has held an EU adequacy decision recognising the equivalency of its data protection laws with those of the EU GDPR. But for how long? Determined to advance the interests of its domestic digital economy, the UK government has published a draft paper for the wholesale reform of its data protection regime. No more DPIAs; no more mandatory DPO appointments; no more human intervention in AI processing – are just some of the sweeping changes suggested by Whitehall. But can the UK keep its adequacy decision while turning its existing GDPR-based laws on their head, or is it playing with fire and hurtling towards an even more uncertain data future?
The event free to attend for ICS members. To register for the event, visit: https://www.ics.ie/events/member-event-where-to-now-the-uncertain-future-of-uk-data-protection-laws-2156

Connected Tech: When should you exercise caution?
6.15 – 8pm
In-person in Dublin, Cork, Athlone, Maynooth, also online
As part of Science Week 2021 the SFI ADAPT Centre is set to host a national conversation on AI focused on connected technologies. This multi-venue, interactive event will take place on the 11th of November and aims to explore the information we give to apps and home assistant devices. Are we giving away too much of our personal information? Is the return worth it? What happens to our data when it is beamed out into cyberspace?
We live in an increasingly connected world where customers want their devices to stay connected. However companies track us through our mobile phones and the devices, websites and apps we use as we navigate both the online and offline worlds. As a result, we leave a trail of personal information behind. This information is then bought and sold by others and used to influence our choices online.
This event, which forms part of the broader Science Week calendar and SFI’s Creating our Future initiative, invites members of the public from across Ireland to join a physical event in one of four locations: Radisson Blu Hotel in Athlone; Melbourne Building in MTU in Cork; Aula Maxima in Maynooth University; and Dublin City University. For those who can’t join the physical event there is a hybrid option to join online. All the locations will be connected and the discussion will form an all-Ireland conversation on Artificial Intelligence.
