Safer Internet Day
Nationwide
Safer Internet Day, an EU wide initiative to promote a safer Internet for all users, especially young people, will be celebrated on the 7th of February 2017. This will be the fourteenth year of the event and this year’s theme is, Be the Change: Unite for a Better Internet.
Last year over 67,000 young people and 463 schools and organisations celebrated Safer Internet Day across Ireland. This year, the focus of the campaign will be to enable parents to effectively create a better Internet by maintaining an open and honest dialogue with their children about their online lives. To do this, Webwise will launch a new dedicated online parenting hub, Webwise Parents, and a handbook which will provide parents with easy access to practical advice and information to help address their concerns about the various issues facing their children online.
Featuring expert advice from professionals including John Sharry (child and family psychotherapist) and Colman Noctor (child and adolescent psychoanalytical psychotherapist), topics will include:

Eircode is a smart location postcode for all Irish postal addresses. Every address across the country has a unique Eircode which shows exactly where it is located. It is now possible to quickly identify distances and routes between addresses. It is also possible to calculate distance and identify the optimum route to or from previously non-unique addresses.
We want to explore the benefits of Government data sets and the use of Eircodes further. We are hosting a Hackathon inviting creative minds, technologists, designers, policy experts and innovators to come together and find ways to make it easier for people to locate and interact with government services. Hackers will be tasked with developing solutions to challenges set on this one day event.

Ulster Bank will gather developers, coders, designers, entrepreneurs and investors, to join Ireland’s only banking Hackathon from 17th to 19th February in partnership with Dogpatch Labs. Participants will come up with ideas which are quickly ‘hacked’ together to create operable and viable propositions to benefit customers.
Across the three days, participants will work in teams to deliver working prototypes around themes of financial services to enable ‘open banking’. The Hackathon will culminate in pitches to the judging panel which comprises Patrick Eltridge, RBS CIO, Ciaran Coyle, Ulster Bank Chief Administrative Officer, Patrick Walsh, Dogpatch Labs MD, David Erixon, Head of Digital and Customer Innovation at Ulster Bank, and also to senior business leaders. Irish game companies are dominating a very competitive market place populated with 500 new games on to the mobile platform every day, according to the organisers of Games Fleadh 2017.
In its 14th year, Games Fleadh continues to lead the way in recognising the brightest and best among the country’s student game developers, while also bringing together the collective knowledge of some of the leading names in the gaming industry.
This year’s event is no exception, with representatives from Microsoft, EA Games, GameSparks, First Data, Simvirtua and Imirt gathering at the Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT) campus in Thurles to lend their support to an all-island games design and development competition for third level students.
The Games Fleadh 2017 event will feature the Game Studio Racing theme competition, which challenges game development students to design and build their own game. First year game development students will fight it out with their java programmed virtual tanks in the Robocode competition.

TechFire: Are cracks in cloud protection leaving your apps vulnerable?

Hackers are experts in distraction and confusion. They often use one technique to distract from the use of another.
However phishing, encryption malware and DDoS attacks — though garnering much attention — are often poorly understood as being narrowly focused on one aspect of operation. In truth, today’s attacks can target any layer of application availability, leaving organisations vulnerable, irrespective of the strength of their cloud platform — public, hybrid or private.
The first TechFire briefing of 2017 on 1 March will examine the nature of today’s attacks with respect to protecting the entire application infrastructure, across clouds and down to the premises.

From Techno-Hypnosis to Orgies of Activism: On the Nihilism of Technology & the Technologies of Nihilism

According to Dr Nolen Gertz, Assistant Professor of Applied Philosophy, there is a tendency in technological production called the ‘leisure-as-liberation’ model of technological design. In this lecture he will outline how it has evolved from Aristotle to Marx, to today.
In addition, Gertz aims to demonstrate how Nietzsche would criticise the idea that we could find liberation through leisure and will introduce Don Ihde’s post-phenomenology in order to set up parallels between Nietzsche’s human-nihilism relations and Ihde’s human-technology relations.
How can technologies mediate nihilism and how can nihilism mediate technologies? Dr Gertz will reflect on how rehabilitating the concept of responsibility can help us to move away from this nihilistic leisure-as-liberation model of technological design.

Key steps to preventing a ransomware attack

Ward Solutions’ recent survey revealed that one-fifth of Irish businesses have been held to ransom by cybercriminals in the past 12 months. The survey, carried out in association with TechPro, was taken by 170 senior IT professionals and decision makers in Ireland just prior to the recent WannaCry attacks.
As is clear from the survey results and the latest rapidly spreading virus linked to Petya and GoldenEye that ransomware attacks are on the increase in Ireland. Organisations need to act now and put in place a strategic plan to protect their assets. This plan should highlight the necessary precautions that are required to prevent a ransomware attack, what to do if an attack occurs and how to minimise damage in the wake of such an incident.

Eureka is the result of a strategic collaboration between the Institute of Technology Carlow, Carlow Museum and the County Library in Carlow.
Through innovative outreach to young and old in STEM subjects and topics, it is hoped that Eureka will become a flagship STEM calendar event for the region. The festival, which has been kindly supported by Science Foundation Ireland, runs during National Science Week.
Kicking off on Monday 13 November, Eureka offers a varied programme of events for primary, secondary and third-level students as well as teachers, academics and members of the public. They include: K’Nex physics prototyping for primary school students; a blueprint challenge for TY students; engineering and robotics workshops; a ‘back of the napkin’ concept challenge; a public debate; a STEM table quiz; coding workshops for teachers; technology and engineering seminars for the public; student poster exhibitions; a movie screening with an applied maths theme; a STEM bake-off and a fireworks display.
The last day of the festival will feature Dargan 150, a conference on the work and theories of the Carlow engineer William Dargan.
