Xbox One trolls to face warnings and penalties
Microsoft is ramping up its enforcement efforts on the Xbox One, with warnings and potential penalties for bad behaviour.
Players who receive enough negative feedback from other players will see their reputations drop from “Good” to “Needs Work.” And starting this month, Microsoft will send warnings to those players, encouraging them to improve their behaviour.
If the negative feedback continues, players will receive an ‘Avoid Me’ reputation marker, which can carry penalties. For example, players may have a harder time getting into multiplayer matches, and may be barred from certain privileges such as broadcasting on Twitch.tv.
In the future, Microsoft says it will also offer rewards for good behavior, but the company didn’t go into details.
Because the system is reliant on feedback from other players, it opens the door to abuse. But Microsoft says it has several ways to sniff out bogus reputation attacks. For instance, feedback from players who haven’t played with the alleged offender, or who have low reputations themselves, won’t count for much. Just few bad reports, or reports that cease after a few weeks, aren’t enough to harm the player’s reputation either.
Microsoft first started talking about the Xbox One’s reputation system last July, but didn’t get into specifics about warnings and punishments. With the recent launch of the online-only Titanfall, there are probably a few players who could use some time in the penalty box.
