X stops business activities in Brazil after threats to court
X is shutting down its business operations in Brazil because of what it calls “censorship orders” from a judge at Brazil’s supreme court. Furthermore it wants to arrest one of the social network’s legal representatives in Brazil if X does not comply with orders to remove certain content from its platform.
X will remain available online to users in Brazil, but will close its office in the country.
Earlier this year, the court ordered X to block certain accounts on X. At issue was from spreading fake news and hate during the government of former president Jair Bolsonaro.
Bolsonaro lost the election to leftist President Lula. Last year, a court ruled that Bolsonaro was barred from participating in Brazilian politics until 2030 because he spread disinformation.
Owner Elon Musk has argued that orders are against the law, but wanted to cooperate first.
Now a judge is threatening a fine of some €3,300 a day for each day the orders are not followed.
