X slammed by denial of service attack
Service on social platform X has been disrupted by a distributed denial of service attack, rendering the site largely unusable to its estimated 600 million monthly active users.
The Russian-based group Dark Storm has claimed responsibility for the attack that has disrupted the service for the past two days.
Identitied in 2023, Dark Storm is believed to be based in Russia and has limited its attacks to nation states, in particular against NATO members and Israel.
“We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of attack power,” posted owner Elon Musk, who pointed the finger at pro-Ukraine hackers.
Musk is more prominent and controversial than ever, not least because he is indiscriminately cutting government agencies with DOGE and his actions have already put thousands of public servants out of work.
It’s been a bad few days for Musk’s other era-defining company, Tesla. Several showrooms have been defaced by Musk’s detractors and vehicles are being defaced with graffiti. One particularly funny meme has rival companies’ logos on Tesla cars to protect against vandalism.
