Trend Micro to kids: What’s Your Story?

In order to generate awareness about online safety among children, Trend Micro, a global cloud security organisation with EMEA headquarters in Cork, recently launched a special competition for kids called What’s Your Story.

Children over seven years are being invited to submit a short video, song, poem or drawing to share their advice to other young people about keeping safe. The winner will receive a grand prize of €3,000 with a school runner-up prize of €1,000 and 3 individual runner-up prizes of €500 each.

Entries may be submitted until 3 April 2012, when a public voting period will run until 17 April 2012. The entries will then be reviewed by the judging panel, which includes Trend Micro, and their partners in this competition, WebWise, Discovery Science Festival, Facebook and ReAssureMe.com.

"While the Internet is an amazing place for children to learn new things and interact with each other, it’s very important to learn how to stay safe online. Our research shows that one in five children confess to being embarrassed by a picture someone else has posted of them online and downloading ‘free’ music from the Internet. One in ten also report being upset by something they’ve see online, and very concerning, admit to being friends with people on Facebook who they don’t know in real life," said Avril Ronan, programme coordinator for Trend Micro’s Internet safety for kids and families.

"We wanted to create a fun way to inform kids about online safety. What’s Your Story gives children over seven the opportunity to explain Internet safety through a drawing, a poem or song, or even a video. The competition provides an ideal opportunity for schools and individuals to secure some fantastic prizes for their schools and themselves."
