The Noxon iRadio from Terratec is an internet radio that can also wirelessly stream music from a PC to the room in which it is placed.
At first glance we were a little taken aback by the design of the iRadio – instead of looking like a modern device, its white steel exterior and silver buttons made it look as though it had come straight out of the 1950s. The speaker was also quite small, which made us wonder how much volume it would be able to produce.
Nevertheless, we can’t complain about setting up the wireless access, which was fairly easy. For those who have not yet come to grips with wireless, there is also the option of connecting to broadband over a wired network connection.
After a few simple configurations we were ready to, quite literally, rock. The iRadio quickly found and displayed internet radio stations displaying the country of origin and genre on the blue and yellow screen in the right-hand corner of the device. There were some good stations available and it’s possible to save up to five of them as favourites, accessed by buttons on the unit’s front panel.
We were pleased to be proved wrong when it came to sound quality which, although not enough to get the user an Asbo, filled a medium-sized room clearly and without any crackle. The bass response was also consistent with the volume.
In addition to internet radio, the Noxon can also stream MP3 and WMA music from the PC into any room it is placed in. It uses a UPnP music server installed on the PC on which music is kept. We used the free MusicMatch Jukebox software that came with the device, but it’s also possible to use Windows Media Connect or any other compatible software.
Verdict 4 stars
A wireless device that is surprisingly easy to set up, with good sound quality.
