TelecityGroup Ireland opens DUB4 data centre
TelecityGroup Ireland, the carrier neutral data centre operator, has opened its DUB4 facility in Ballycoolin, west Dublin, the fourth such facility in Ireland.
The 2,500 square metre facility boasts high security, a wide array of connectivity and sophisticated power and cooling infrastructure that ensures a low PUE, despite its multi-tenancy operation.
Speaking at the launch, Minister for Health and TD for the constituency, Leo Varadkar said such investments were particularly welcome, especially when they bring high quality jobs to the area.
The minster said that while Big Data is a relatively new phenomenon, the government takes it very seriously and recognises its potential for Ireland.
“That’s why it is being specifically targeted in the Action Plan for Jobs,” said the minister.
“In the last few years we have made a big effort to create a welcoming environment for Big Data and data centres here in Ireland.”
“Data centres are essential if we are going to remain at the vanguard for Big Data.”
The DUB4 facility will employ 10 people in engineering roles.
“We have seen a significant increase in demand from new and existing customers for high capacity, diverse and low latency connectivity – especially to the United States,” said Maurice Mortell, VP of emerging markets and managing director, TelecityGroup Ireland. “It was this high demand for TelecityGroup data centres in Ireland that drove our major expansion in Ireland in 2011.”
“This new Dub 4 data centre is further testament of this success.”
“Our centre will offer a high number of connectivity providers and will employ a large engineering team on a 24/7 basis to monitor and maintain the data centre and provide a continuous high level of service.”
Northwest Business Park was selected as the location for the new DUB4 data centre, the company said, due to its extensive connectivity options, its secure location and its proximity to TelecityGroup’s existing DUB3 data centre, enabling a campus extension from one facility to another. This helps to support the facility’s operational resilience and ensures customer demand for expansion is met.
The DUB4 facility employees water-side free cooling, as well as full chiller based cooling. Typically, with the favourable Irish climate, the facility expects to operate on free cooling for around 7 months of the year. The free air cooling can also be supplemented with an evaporative water, further reducing the need for chillers.
Despite being a multi-tenant facility where workloads can be as varied as the number of clients hosted, TelecityGroup Ireland expects the PUE to be around 1.2, putting it in the highly efficient category, according to Uptime Institute figures which put average DC PUE ratings at 1.7 in 2014.
Ireland has become one of the fastest growing groups within Telecity worldwide, said Mortell.
“The DUB4 facility with its 2,500 sq metres of whitespace and 3.6MW of IT load represents the next generation of our data centre facilities in Ireland.”
“We have the most densely connected facilities in the country, all interconnected. We connect to every single internet exchange in Europe. We host, or can connect you, via our Cloud IX platform, to all major public cloud providers,” said Mortell.
“We have built a digital ecosystem that can enable your business to move globally through networks, get access to new markets and technology, enabling scalability in your business without all the pain.”
