Apple has officially confirmed the delay of the long-awaited update for Siri, revealing that the promised AI features will now appear sometime in the “coming year”.

Apple initially advertised enhancements to the digital personal assistant for months before announcing the official delay. This iteration was to significantly enhance conversational capabilities, aiming for a more natural and intuitive interaction experience. While Siri has seen some improvements with iOS 18, including ChatGPT integration, its far away from the promised user experience.

Cupertino has attributed this extended development timeline to complex technical obstacles and a wave of unforeseen bugs plaguing the AI team’s progress.

Despite initial plans to integrate the advanced features last spring in iOS 18.4, followed by subsequent hopes for a release in May alongside iOS 18.5, Apple acknowledges that delivering these functionalities has proven to be a greater challenge than expected. Reports suggest that even high-ranking officials like software chief Craig Federighi encountered performance issues with the AI features, raising concerns about their readiness.

Due to this setback, Apple’s AI team may need to completely revise the current development roadmap, potentially delaying the launch of these features to a future generation of Siri.

Apple’s slower pace of AI development raises concerns about falling behind competitors like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft, who are actively pushing the boundaries of conversational AI. Amazon is even releasing its enhanced AI assistant, Alexa+, later this month, making the competition even more apparent.

Apple observer John Gruber said openly communicating the delay was a wise decision, emphasising the importance of delivering a polished and reliable product rather than rushing an unfinished one. He stressed that maintaining user trust is of utmost importance for Apple at this critical moment.
