Search engine Perplexity builds Web browser

Agentic features arrive in yet another Chrome alternative

Another new Web browser is about to be released. Since it is Perplexity.ai behind it, the market can expect something different than usual this time.

One novelty in the new browser, called Comet, is that Perplexity is incorporating agentic search. Simply put, the browser not only provides answers, but also performs tasks.

A task might be: ‘give me three travel options by train and plane for a return trip to London for my holiday in May and book the cheapest’. That task involves a search across multiple travel modes and performs a transaction.

In AI jargon, an agent is an online actor that can perform multiple subtasks and use the output of one as input for another.

Perplexity hasn’t yet revealed Comet’s exact form and function. Conceptually, the agent feature fits with the tech company’s core business of providing definitive answers to search questions, instead of a list of blue clickable hyperlinks.

Comet is based on Chromium, as evidenced by this job posting – the open source variant of Google’s Chrome.

Outside the main players of Chrome (still the world’s most popular browser), Edge, Firefox and Brave, the browser market has a number of smaller players. For example, Arc underwent a pivot in late 2024, from making a browser to building a browser environment centred on AI features. The gap left by Arc maker TBC in doing so is being filled by the Zen browser.
