Russia boosts Bitcoin mining to optimise energy capacity
Rosseti, Russia’s largest state power grid operator, wants to enable Bitcoin mining at underutilised power plants. The initiative is intended to optimise energy consumption and generate additional revenue for the company. Rosseti claims it can coordinate the placement of mining infrastructure thanks to its extensive network and advanced monitoring systems.
The company’s strategy is to connect electricity consumers, especially Bitcoin miners, to power plants with limited demand. By doing so, Rosseti aims to improve the use of existing capacity, increase tariff revenues and contribute to regional economic growth through tax payments. In addition, they are considering special tariffs to effectively manage demand and encourage further expansion of mining activities.
Bitcoin mining in Russia has experienced significant growth following government initiatives that legalised and regulated cryptomining activities. Changes in legislation made it possible for companies and individuals to engage in mining after registering in the national mining registry. In addition, a recent bill exempted mining activities from VAT, leading to increased demand for mining equipment.
Despite this positive development, concerns have been raised about the potential strain on local power grids from Bitcoin mining. To address these concerns, Russia has imposed restrictions on mining activities in specific energy-sensitive regions during peak periods. The Kremlin has warned of a potential energy crisis if the sector remains unregulated, stressing the need for a balanced approach that supports economic growth while ensuring grid stability.
