Thomson Reuters’ news service has confirmed that both its blogging platform and Twitter account were hacked this weekend, where false stories were posted relating to the ongoing disputes in Syria.
On Friday, Reuters reported that its blogging platform was accessed and false posts were made live relating to an interview with Riad al-Asaad, the head of the Free Syrian Army.
"Reuters.com was a target of a hack on Friday. Our blogging platform was compromised and fabricated blog posts were falsely attributed to several Reuters journalists," the company said.
"Reuters did not carry out such an interview and the posting has been deleted."
The blogging platform was temporarily taken offline on Friday, while Reuters worked to address the problem. However, on Sunday, it then reported that its Twitter technology news account was hacked and false tweets were posted, again relating to the armed struggle in Syria.
A series of 22 fake tweets were sent out, some of which carried reports about Syrian rebel losses suffered in battles with Syrian government forces.
"Earlier today @ReutersTech was hacked and changed to @ReutersME. The account has been suspended and is currently under investigation," said a Thomson Reuters spokesperson.
