A privacy complaint has been filed against Pinterest in France by the advocacy organisation NOYB, which claims that the platform unlawfully processes user data without consent.

NOYB claims that Pinterest allows tracking for advertising purposes by default, in violation of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which mandates opt-out options for such data processing.

An opt-out means users automatically participate in data processing unless they explicitly indicate they do not want to.

The complaint alleges that Pinterest uses data from visited websites and third parties to serve personalised ads, potentially benefiting financially from user data without their knowledge or consent.

The complaint refers to a recent ruling by the Court of Justice of the European Union, which indicated that personalised ads cannot simply be condoned under “legitimate interest” under the GDPR.

NOYB is demanding that Pinterest erase all data collected for personalised ads and notify affected users.

They also urge French data protection authority CNIL to impose sanctions on Pinterest to deter future violations.

Pinterest, a popular platform known for its virtual mood boards and image-based inspiration, is considered a “very large online platform” by the European Commission due to its significant user base in the EU.

This designation requires platforms to follow specific rules set forth in EU regulations.
