Bookmaker chain Paddy Power has launched the Golden Tweet/Wooden Twit Awards to run alongside this year’s general election.

The Golden Tweet trophy will be awarded to the politician or political party who, in the eyes of an expert judging panel, demonstrate the most effective use of social media in their election campaign. Conversely, the Wooden Twit will honour the individual or organisation responsible for the single greatest social media gaffe during the campaign.

The judging panel includes founder of the Irish Blog Awards Damien Mulley, political blogger Suzy Byrne and Tom Farrell, digital brand manager at paddypower.com.

Paddy Power is also taking bets on the winner of both awards with Dublin South-East independent candidate Dylan Haskins the 7/4 joint favourite for the Golden Tweet alongside Green Party senator Dan Boyle. Cork North-Central Independent candidate Fergus O’Rourke has emerged at the early 3/1 favourite for the Wooden Twit Award following a Foursquare check-in stating his attendance at a constituent’s funeral mass last week.

“We’ve already seen some fantastic and innovative work in this area”, said Farrell “and it only seems right to reward those candidates who demonstrate their understanding of technology. On the other hand, with pressure from central offices, some politicians will be tweeting on a wing and a prayer – and slip ups are guaranteed!”

The winner of both awards will be announced on Twitter @pppolitics on 1 March.
