Musicians call AI a creative threat in open letter
Two hundred mostly American artists are launching a protest against the use of generative artificial intelligence. It threatens their craft and their livelihood, they say in an open letter.
The group is calling on AI developers, tech company platforms and digital music services to stop using AI as part of the creative product and to train their models with it.
Artists such as Pearl Jam, Nicki Minaj, Billie Eilish and Stevie Wonder called the process in which the new technology is creeping into music “a race to the bottom”.
Noticeably absent from the list are names such as Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Ariane Grande and Drake. Also missing was Beyoncé, but in a press release accompanying the release of her new album Cowboy Carter said: “The more I see the world change, the more I feel the need for a deeper connection to purity. When I see artificial intelligence, digital filters and digital programming, I actually want to go back to real instruments. No layers of instruments, but rather I keep it raw, organic and human.”
It is doubtful that AI builders will be moved by the call. An earlier international call for a pause on AI development by academics and industry stalwarts failed to make an impact.
This week OpenAI announced it was working on software to accurately recreate human voices.
