Internet security specialist Trend Micro is to expand its centre in Cork, which handles operations for Europe, the Middle East and Asia. With IDA support, the firm plans to expand its existing workforce by almost 70%, recruiting 100 people over the next three years.

Trend Micro says it will expand many existing functions and teams, including technical customer support. In addition, the firm plans to establish a new European anti-malware service, supporting TrendLabs’ global threat research and support in other regions. As a result, the Cork office will increasingly play a strategic role in its parent company’s global business.

Trend Micro was launched in the US and is headquartered in Tokyo, and has become a widely recognised name in the IT security market since its start 20 years ago.

The company opened its Cork EMEA operations centre in 2003, initially as a shared service centre delivering back office support. It has since expanded well beyond this original mandate and now operates a business services campus at the IDA Business & Technology Park in Cork. It has responsibility for 15 functions, including financial shared services, business application services centre and technical support.

IDA CEO Barry O’Leary, commenting from Tokyo, said: “We are delighted to see increased investment from Japanese clients like Trend Micro. I welcome it and congratulate them on the further expansion of the Cork operation. This continued investment in its Irish operations is a vote of confidence in the strength of the IT sector in Ireland today.”
