“This coupled with the rise in malicious attacks such as malware and cyberattacks means that more and more companies are taking on BCDR solutions,” said Naughton. “While some disruptions, like the weather, are becoming more predictable and can have more preventative rather than reactive strategies and plans in place, there are definitely areas which are growing in this space.”

Echoing others in the industry, he added that cloud-to-cloud continuity “will get serious with SaaS including cloud-to-cloud back-ups for mainstream SaaS offerings, DRaaS and cloud (based) DR”. While finally, Naughton said that communications will also become much more important as there is a need to “communicate effectively in an emergency whether it is using social media or having policies in place in relation to what information can be shared with the public”.

Disaster perceptions
“The perception remains that a full disaster recovery solution is an expensive exercise, heavy in capital expenditure. The reality however is that DR does not always require capital outlay and is one of the most cost-effective services to outsource to a local cloud partner” Eddie O'Rourke_Novosco_web Novosco (Ireland): Eddie O’Rourke
As the Irish economy embarks on the road to recovery, many organisations are taking cautious steps towards investing in their IT infrastructure again. One area which does not always attract big investment however, is disaster recovery. The perception remains that a full disaster recovery solution is an expensive exercise, heavy in capital expenditure. The reality however is that disaster recovery does not always require capital outlay and is one of the most cost-effective services to outsource to a local cloud partner. As virtualisation and cloud technologies have matured, so too has the surrounding ecosystem. This means that service providers such as Novosco, have taken advantage of data centre investments, advances in technologies and mature operational frameworks to offer a consumption-based model for requirements such as this.

Workloads which have been replicated need only be powered up for invocations or actual failovers. This allows the service provider to be extremely competitive, by only having to charge for the replication and passive storage of virtual machines, in between invocations. The benefit to the customer is that the replicated environment can be safely tested in isolation, without impacting on production.

By outsourcing this service to a local provider, it can free up considerable time for staff to work on initiatives which add more direct value to the business. One area which is often overlooked here is the network. However, by combining services such as Novosco’s CloudStream Net with CloudStream DR, customers can include network failover, to achieve complete protection for their organisation.
