Meteor customers in Cork now have access to 4G connectivity for mobile handsets and mobile broadband dongles. Cork joins Dublin, Athlone and Carlow in getting 4G with Limerick and Galway coming on stream "very shortly".

Meteor said it expects to have more than 40% 4G population (as opposed to Geographical) coverage by the end of the year. At present 4G is available for contract customers with a pre-pay option scheduled for 2014.

Speeds will average 10-15Mb/s peaking at 20-40Mb/s.

Customers will require a 4G handset, SIM card and an 18- or 24-month contract. For €49 per month, the Smart Essential plan includes unlimited calls and texts to any network, plus 3Gb of data monthly, and a choice of 4G ready smartphones for free. A SIM only, 30-day contract is €37.50, and includes unlimited calls and texts to any network plus 1Gb of data. Data caps will only apply after 1 March 2014.
