Meta is making targeted layoffs in several departments, including WhatsApp, Instagram and Reality Labs.

The layoffs are not company-wide, but targeted at specific teams that are being reorganised.

Affected employees will be prioritised for alternative opportunities within the company.

Some Meta employees have publicly announced on social media that they are losing their jobs. This includes Jane Manchun Wong, a well-known figure for discovering unreleased app features before joining the Threads team in 2023.

Dave Arnold, Meta spokesman, confirmed these developments, saying that certain teams are being restructured to better align resources with long-term goals and location strategies. He emphasised that this includes moving some teams to new locations and giving employees different roles. Arnold assured that when positions are eliminated, the company is prioritising finding alternative opportunities for affected employees.

These recent layoffs follow a smaller series of layoffs within Meta’s Reality Labs division earlier this year. The tech giant initially laid off 11,000 employees in 2022 after experiencing overstretched growth expectations during the pandemic recovery. They then announced another 10,000 layoffs as part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg ‘s ‘year of efficiency’ initiative in 2023.
