Lero, the Irish Software Engineering Centre based at the University of Limerick, is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Mike Hinchey as Co-Director and Professor of Software Engineering at UL. He takes up his appointment on 1 June.
Until last year Prof Hinchey was Director of the Software Engineering Laboratory at NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre in Greenbelt, Maryland. He remains as a consultant to NASA until the end of 2008. He is currently Professor of Computer Science and Director of the Graduate Programme, Loyola College in Maryland.
Prof Hinchey, a native of Limerick city, is a graduate of UL where he was awarded the President’s Gold Medal as leading student in his graduating year. He was awarded an M.Sc in Computation at the University of Oxford and a Ph.D in Computer Science, University of Cambridge.
Prof Hinchey has held a number of professorships, both visiting and permanent, in a number of Universities including the University of Nebraska, Queen’s University Belfast, New Jersey Institute of Technology and the University of Skovde in Sweden.
Particular areas of software research for Prof Hinchey include Formal Methods, Autonomous Systems and Software Reliability.
Commenting on his appointment the Centre Director of Lero, Prof Kevin Ryan, said: “we are delighted that Prof Mike Hinchey has agreed to join us here at Lero as co-director. It is a wonderful testament to the high calibre of work being done by the people at Lero throughout Ireland that Mike has agreed to return home to join in our endeavours.
“His arrival brings to Lero an internationally known figure with expertise in several areas of interest to us, including autonomic systems, mathematics of software engineering and software product lines.
“Mike has a signifiant publication history and is a regular keynote speaker at prominent events and conferences and is prominent in various organisations such as IEEE Computer Society
