The Golden Capsule is a hands-free IV device for use in disaster zones

The James Dyson Award announced its 2023 winners, recognising innovation in international, humanitarian, and sustainability categories. Each winner selected by Sir James Dyson, received €34,000 for further development.

The international winner, The Golden Capsule by Yujin Chae, Daeyeon Kim, Yeonghwan Shin, and Yuan Bai, provides a hands-free IV device for medics in disaster zones. Using elastic forces and air pressure differences, it eliminates the need for medics to hold IV packs during patient transport.

In the humanitarian category, Piotr Tłuszcz’s The Life Chariot addresses challenges in medical evacuations during conflicts, offering a safer off-road ambulance solution. Inspired by experiences in the Balkans and Pyrenees, Tłuszcz’s design enhances rescue teams’ evacuation capabilities.

The sustainability winner, E-Coating by Hoi Fung Ronaldo Chan and Can Jovial Xiao, tackles energy consumption in Hong Kong. Made from recycled waste glass, E-Coating reduces heat absorption on building exteriors, cutting down on air-conditioning usage.

The international winners said: “We saw the difficulties medics and first responders faced at natural disaster sites when transporting patients with IVs, and feedback for our solution has been positive so far. Ultimately, we hope to establish this as the new standard for IV packs, not only in emergency situations, but in hospitals too.”
