What is NIS2 and why does it matter?

The Network and Information Security Directive (NIS2) is a significant update to the EU’s
cybersecurity law, designed to strengthen the security posture of critical infrastructure and
essential services across the bloc. It applies not just to organisations based in the EU, but
also to any entity that provides services to – or trades with – the EU in certain sectors.

For the first time, the Directive extends its reach to 15 sectors, including: Energy, Transport, Banking, Financial Services, Health, Public Administration, Drinking Water Supply & Distribution, Wastewater Management, Digital Infrastructure, ICT Service Management, Postal & Courier Services, Food Production, Processing & Distribution, Manufacturing, Space, Waste Management, and Research Organisations.

The updates place stringent new requirements on risk management, supply chain security,
incident reporting, and board-level accountability.

Failing to comply could lead to serious consequences, including fines of up to €10 million or
2% of global annual turnover, reputational damage, and service disruption. Yet, many
organisations still aren’t fully clear on how to start preparing.
