Closer co-operation between Government, Academica and the private sector are essential if Ireland is to continue its progress as a hub for technology accompanies according to a strategy document authored by the ISA, ICT Ireland and Ibec. Entitled The Global Technology Hub, the report outlined a six-point strategy for growing the technology sector, identifying Ireland’s strengths as an English-speaking EU member state with a flexible workforce and entrepreneurial spirit, but warned that the state faced serious challenges in up-skilling its workforce to meet the needs of the tech sector.

The small uptake of STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) leading to a lack of ICT graduates was noted as a significant challenge to overcome, as was the lack of language skills.

The report outlined a six-point plan for getting Ireland to achieve its potential as “the digital centre for SMEs across Europe”: A focus on delivering digital services to companies to get them trading online; upgrading city infrastructure; the use of Big Data; cloud technology; apps, social and mobile content; and the expansion of high-tech manufacturing.

“Six key prospects for strategic investments have been identified that if supported will deliver investment, growth and jobs,” said the report. “In order to develop these high-potential areas for growth, it is necessary that all stakeholders are aligned in a collaborative manner and avoid duplicating efforts. We must be smart and efficient. Ireland must build on its strong history of supporting and growing its technology industry.”
