It’s over and out with Google Podcast, the mobile app that could never really make a run at the leading positions held by Spotify and Apple.
Google is announcing that the app will no longer be available for download as of April 2024. The team will also no longer make updates to the app.
The saying ‘third time’s the charm’ does not apply to Google. Still, the search giant has not abandonned the medium. YouTube Podcasts – a collection bin for videos from podcasters – is going nowhere. Research earlier this year showed that podcast fans like to watch audio creators at work, making the video sharing platform a natural fit for current listening trend.
Apple and Spotify have the bulk of the market but Google could end up ahead of them by foresaking pure audio and leaning into what YouTube has always been there to do: broadcast yourself.
