Google has saluted the counties in Ireland that are harnessing the Internet for economic growth, at its inaugural eCounties Awards.
Google looked at the Republic’s 26 counties and ranked each in terms of their AdWords customer growth coupled with the number of local businesses which embraced the Getting Irish Business Online initiative over the last year.
The eCounties Award winners were announced by Minister for communications, Energy and Natural Resources Pat Rabbitte in Google head office in Dublin’s Barrow Street.
The top eCounty in Ireland award went to Dublin, followed by Wicklow and Carlow. Google will be hosting events in Carlow and Wicklow next week to celebrate their Awards.
Simon Bolger, Google director, EMEA online partnerships said: "We might have expected Dublin to be top of the eCounty ranking but it is interesting that two less industrialised counties – Wicklow and Carlow are ranked second and third respectively, beating larger counties such as Cork. It reflects what we have seen in other countries where we presented these Awards – that when it comes to the Internet, anybody, almost anywhere, can boost a business by going online."
The top five was rounded out by Meath and Sligo.
