Apple has released a first beta of iOS 18.1 for developers. In it, the first features of Apple Intelligence can be tested. The beta is available for Irish users who have the US set as their country, but they will be put on a waiting list to use the AI features. In the EU, Apple Intelligence will not work anyway.

This first beta includes a limited number of features Apple announced in June, such as Writing Tools, which allows you to rewrite text in Mail, Notes and Pages, for example.

Also launched in this version is the new version of Siri with a glowing border around the screen, as well as automatic e-mail categorisation based on content, summary of e-mail content and more. If you want your tone to be friendly and conversational there’s a seting for that, if you want to be more formal and businesslike, there’s a setting for that as well.

Transcriptions of audio notes and phone calls are also available, only in English for now. Samsung users will feel they have the edge on this feature as translations are already prominent in the Galaxy Fold and Flip.

Image generator, Image Playground, Genmoji and ChatGPT integration are still missing.

Apple also simultaneously released macOS Sequoia 15.1 for Macs with M1 chips. IPad 18.1 also requires the use of the M1 chip. Most features will not be rolled out until next year.
