A team of students who recently finished their finals at Dublin City University were celebrating after being named overall winners in The Digital Hub’s Best in Show competition. Now in its fourth year, Best in Show is a competition for final-year creative students, who are invited to submit samples of their work to The Digital Hub for assessment by a team of digital media industry experts.

Diarmaid Keane from Rathcoole, Co. Dublin; Shane Brennan from Portlaoise; Shane Doyle from Wicklow town, and Aaron Chalke from Ballintubber, Co. Mayo win €1,000 due to their success in the online public vote to choose the overall winner of Best in Show.

As category-winners in the Film and Video Production category of the competition, the four students also get work placements this summer with Red Diamond Media, a digital media group – based in The Digital Hub – which focuses on TV, radio and web production, and digital content creation.

For their Best in Show entry, the four students – who were classmates in the BSc in Multimedia course at DCU – produced a series of short films for broadcast on www.pashli.org, the website of the charity Pashli, which works with orphans and the elderly in Belarus. The team-mates travelled to Belarus last Christmas to capture and record the work being done by Pashli there. They also created a new logo for Pashli as part of a re-branding of the organisation.

Commenting on their selection as overall winners of Best in Show, Cathy Grieve, the owner of Red Diamond Media, said: “I’m delighted that the winners in the Film and Video Production category have also been chosen by the public as the overall winners of Best in Show, and I’m very much looking forward to having these four students working with me over the coming months.

“The work they submitted for assessment is of a very high quality, and keeps the viewer engaged and eager to learn more about the subject-matter. I believe these four men have great careers ahead of them, and I’m delighted to be able to give them a start in Red Diamond Media this summer.”

Diarmaid Keane, a member of the winning team, said the possibility of winning a work placement in a leading digital media company was what enticed his team to enter Best in Show in the first place.

“We’re all just finished college now and starting to look for jobs, and – as everyone knows – it isn’t really the best time to be a graduate looking for work. So we were really pleased that part of what Best in Show was offering category-winners was a two-week work placement. Getting that sort of experience is so important to have on your CV when it comes to job interviews in the future.

“Last week, we found out our entry had won the Film and Video Production category of the competition and, of course, we were thrilled. Now, today, we’ve found out that we also topped the online public vote and win €1,000, which is fantastic news. We’re all delighted, and we’re really looking forward to starting our work placements with Red Diamond Media.”

Mr. Keane’s team beat off competition from finalists in four other categories to win the overall Best in Show title: Bruno Palma from Dublin 8 in the Animation category; Edel Flynn from Clonsilla, Dublin 15 in the Graphic Design/Visual Communications category; Katrine Westum from Dublin City Centre in the Interior Design Category, and Stefan Baz Berrios from Blackrock in the Multimedia category.

Despite losing out on the overall cash prize, the four other finalists also get work placements in leading digital media companies: Design Squared, Kavaleer Productions, Pixelsoup and Red Dog.
