    All-Island Business Angel Conference

    Powerscourt Hotel, Wicklow

The all-day event aims to encourage more people to get involved in business angel investing, highlighting the opportunities and rewards that it presents.

Business angel investment is continuing to grow across the island of Ireland, with an increasing number of start-ups receiving vital early-stage funding from individual angel investors and syndicates. In December last year, HBAN announced that its members have now invested more than €100M in start-ups across the island of Ireland since 2007.

HBAN’s conference will explore the theme of ‘Driving value with exits and data’, with speakers discussing how data can inform better investment decisions and ultimately, lead to more exits. Meanwhile, a combination of talks, panel discussions and masterclasses will equip attendees with the knowledge they need to create a healthy portfolio.

John Harbison, Chairman Emeritus of Tech Coast Angels (TCA), one of the largest and most active angel investment organisations in the US, will speak at the conference. An active investor, he has achieved returns ranging from 100x – 1,110x in five companies: Microsoft, Apple, Abbott Labs, Nucor and McGraw-Hill. Harbison will discuss how TCA has achieved a 4.9x overall multiple on its angel investments, and how it has developed insights using data analysis to give new angel investors the confidence to build and expand their portfolios.

Dr. Jim Mountjoy, a serial investor and entrepreneur, will draw on his experience to provide insights into how angel investors can recognise a high-potential start-up and how to create value. Jim has spent the last twenty years acting as an investor, mentor, non-executive director and Chairman with a large range of individuals and companies, largely in the technology field. He founded telecoms software company, Euristix, which was sold for over $80 million, and has also had a number of successful exits in recent years.

Áine Denn, co-founder of Altify, will tell the story of how the company’s leadership team built value in their company resulting in a sale to US tech firm, Upland Software, for $84M. Denn is passionate about giving back to the community and investing in people and businesses that challenge norms. She volunteers as a lead entrepreneur for the Irish government-sponsored programmes Going for Growth and Back For Business, helping to foster the success of female and returning emigrant entrepreneurs.

DP-100: Designing and Implementing a Data Science Solution on Azure

    New Horizons Ireland

Gain the necessary knowledge about how to use Azure services to develop, train, and deploy, machine learning solutions. The course starts with an overview of Azure services that support data science. From there, it focuses on using Azure’s premier data science service, Azure Machine Learning service, to automate the data science pipeline. This course is focused on Azure and does not teach the student how to do data science. It is assumed students already know that.

This role is responsible for solving the business problem that initiated the project. While the Data Engineer will prepare the data to be used for the models, the Data Scientist determines what data is needed for model training, creates model features from the data, determines what machine learning model to use, trains and evaluates the model, and often has involvement in model deployment. Often the data scientist needs to evaluate multiple models to determine which performs the best.

Webinar: Ransomware Protection for NetApp Storage

    Online

Grab a coffee, and join Logicalis and ProLion for a 30-minute webinar where we’ll provide you with an overview and demo of how to protect your NetApp environment from a ransomware attack with ProLion Cryptospike.

File shares, by their very nature, are an obvious target for ransomware. If you are running NetApp storage for your file shares, ProLion Cryptospike will ensure there is no vulnerability in your data security

Designed specifically to complement NetApp storage, ProLion Cryptospike uses a three-stage strategy to detect ransomware attacks as they happen. It also provides a user and file audit trail. Scanning NetApp storage for vulnerabilities in real time, it immediately blocks the user and localises the encrypted files if an attack is detected. This prevents continued encryption and, as a result, the failure of critical processes.

Join Logicalis and ProLion at our upcoming webinar where we will discuss the ransomware threat and how we can help you to effectively protect your critical NetApp systems with the addition of ProLion Cryptospike.

MSc in Blockchain – Distributed Ledger Technologies

    Online via Dublin City University

    Two-years part-time course.

Blockchain is a rapidly growing technology with the potential to disrupt traditional practices across a wide range of industries. The lack of technical Blockchain skills is of national and international concern as it is a significant inhibitor to Blockchain adoption in companies across key industries including manufacturing, supply-chain, health, food, finance and the public sector.

With its roots in Bitcoin and crypto currencies, Blockchain technology provides a distributed non-repudiable ledger. It works on decentralised platforms and offers significant advantages for business operations in terms of transparency, elimination of third parties, cost reduction, micropayments, cryptographic security, and permanent transactions. Blockchain enhances the speed and transparency of transactions along complex supply chains while reducing costs. It optimises back and middle business processes and transactions, augmenting security, reporting and regulatory and compliance profiles.

IDA Ireland’s Blockchain strategy aims to promote Ireland as a European location for Blockchain developments and in 2018, the Minister for Finance published a discussion paper examining the potential of virtual currencies and Blockchain technology. Working with Blockchain Ireland, the Technology Ireland ICT Skillnet has identified the skills gap for software developers with the requisite Blockchain knowledge and development skills and is co-funding this new MSc as a direct response to this need.

Lunch & Learn: The Journey to Security in the Cloud

Join eir Business and Cisco for a Lunch & Learn webinar: The Journey to Security in the Cloud.

Digital transformation is driving the move of network security to the cloud, in an approach to security known as Secure Access Service Edge (SASE). SASE gives users and devices secure access to corporate networks, applications and data from anywhere, at any time. Gartner predicts that SASE will fast become the standard for security, with at least 40% of enterprises adopting explicit SASE strategies by 2024.

We’re teaming up with Cisco again to help cybersecurity professionals contend with this new type of network and security needs. See below for info on our speaker. As a Cisco Gold partner, eir is best placed in the market to deploy, configure and manage the solution to keep your organisation secure as you transition to the cloud. Register now to secure your place!

    Webinar speaker: James Brown, Cisco

James is an experienced product leader in Cloud Security at Cisco. He is currently Head of Product for Cloud Security in Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Russia. His focus is supporting customers and partners across the region as they embrace the cloud securely. James joined Cisco via the OpenDNS acquisition, where he was responsible for driving the growth of the platform as an industry leader for DNS security. Prior to this, he led product teams at several high-growth start-ups.

Marsquakes! What we have learnt from the NASA InSight mission after one Martian year on the surface

    6.30

Seismologist Dr John Clinton is to deliver a virtual lecture for the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS). Dr Clinton, who is from Meath, is a co-investigator for NASA’s Mars InSight Mission. He is also the director of the Seismic Networks and the Head of the Earthquake Monitoring section at the Swiss Seismological Service.

The mission is the first comprehensive examination of Mars. Using robotic technology, the mission aims to study the internal structure of Mars to understand how the planet was formed. Dr Clinton is leading the Marsquake Service that is tasked with finding and locating marsquakes. A marsquake is a quake, much like an earthquake, which is caused by the sudden release of energy in the planet’s interior.

At the lecture, Dr Clinton will describe the key features of the hundreds of marsquakes he has observed and present our growing understanding of the Martian interior.
