Information Security — a board matter

    08:45

Enterprise Ireland, East Point Business Park, Dublin

InfoSecurity Ireland will be conducting a seminar here at Enterprise Ireland on 7 November.

This is aimed at briefing C-level managers on how best to engage their Board on information security measures to protect the business and their customers.  While the keynote speaker will be Killian Colleran, co-founder of Norkom (and now CEO of Detica), the other speakers will include Paul Pratley from Verizon speaking on their global Data Breach and Investigations Report.  This is guaranteed to raise eyebrows regarding the nature, extent and impact of information security breaches.

Paul Pratley is a technology forensics expert, experienced working in and leading high profile data breach investigations including payment card data breaches, industrial espionage, custom malware analysis and litigation based examinations. His knowledge, methodology and approach represent the leading edge in technology forensic investigations.

He recently spoke at AusCERT Conference 2013, Information Security Forum (ISF) – Nordic Spring Conference Copenhagen, Denmark, (ISC)2 – Secure Amsterdam Conference 2013, and led the Verizon team which prepared the Data Breach and Investigations Report.

“Irish CEOs need to understand the ‘threat landscape’ their organisations, staff and clients are up against. This is a major challenge for Ireland Inc and this event will help CEOs, C-level and Directors understand risks and countermeasures, including what best practices to put in place to protect not only their own data but more specifically data pertaining to their customers.  Ireland Inc is very lucky to have a pool of Information Security subject matter experts who can help businesses locally and internationally. But we need to ensure CEO’s take the issue seriously, and are educated in the risks and potential impact of security incidents, ” Mathieu Gorge, chairman Infosecurity Ireland

TechFire 8: Your IT users: remote, mobile, secure?

    8am – 10am

Gibson Hotel, Point Village, Dublin 1

How do you accommodate the growing consumerisation of IT without compromising security and control?

That’s the Burning Question posed to the panel at TechFire 8 on 14 November.

Whether you are enabling a mobile workforce or facilitating the Bring-Your-Own trend, data control and security are vital. For devices or applications, security is critical in providing appropriate access while meeting data protection obligations. Already, some legacy firewalls are unable to provide secure access to web 2.0 applications, social media and even for guest access on premise.

TechFire 8, in association with Dell Software, will examine the effects of the consumerisation trend from a security and control perspective. Starting with the next-generation firewall as the keystone of any access plan, this event will outline how to give users what they need to access and process information (on any device) and collaborate with colleagues or partners.

Providing a view of end-to-end solutions, users will share project experience and experts outline best practice, in the business-like TechFire format. Speakers and more information will be confirmed here shortly. Don’t miss it!

    IRISS Cyber Crime Conference

    9am

D4 Clyde Court hotel (formerly Berkeley Court hotel) in Ballsbridge, Dublin

IRISS is announcing that it will host its fifth annual cybercrime conference on Thursday, November 21st in the D4 Clyde Court hotel (formerly Berkeley Court hotel) in Ballsbridge, Dublin .

This year’s conference is being held at a time when cybercrime and IT security is foremost in the minds of most Irish businesses and consumers, following a series of damaging data leaks in Ireland.

IRISS is the Irish Reporting and Information Security Service, set up as independent not-for-profit organisation to provide security services and advice to businesses and consumers throughout Ireland.

Experts on various aspects of cybercrime and cyber security, from global leading organisations such as Google and Amazon, will share their thoughts and experiences with attendees, while a number of panel sessions will provide the opportunity to discuss the latest security threats.

In parallel to the conference, IRISS will also host Ireland’s premier Cyber Security Challenge. This event allows Ireland’s top security experts to compete against each other in a controlled environment to see who will be the first to exploit weaknesses in a number of systems. The purpose of this competition is to demonstrate how attackers could gain access to business systems and to learn how to prevent such attacks.

Integrity Solutions is sponsoring this year’s Cyber Security Challenge. Eoin Goulding, managing director, Integrity Solutions, explains why they are supporting this challenge. “We work closely with companies across Ireland and the UK providing systems and support to combat increasingly sophisticated cyber security attacks. We feel that this challenge will give attendees a real, live sense of what they are up against in the battle to remain secure.”

The conference is open to anyone with responsibility for securing their business information assets. There is a nominal fee of €25 per attendee to cover the costs of catering and other organisational expenses.

Registration is now open at http://irisscert2013.eventbrite.ie/

    Prostrategy Colman Microsoft Dynamics Briefing

    8.30-12.30

    The Crowne Plaza Hotel, Blanchardstown

ProStrategy Colman invite you to join us at our forthcoming Executive Briefing and discover how you can become a dynamic business with innovative, agile solutions from Microsoft – helping you to cut costs, save time and boost profits.

Traditional business applications are passive, backward-looking “systems of record”.  Users do their work, and then as an added step, perform a transaction to tell the software what’s been done.  Rules and reporting help enable compliance and control, but that’s where this kind of software stops.  In today’s world, increasingly flattened by technology, global complexity and new global competition make it critical for a business to be able to rapidly perceive and react to signals, threats and opportunities.  Going one step further, as the pace of business constantly accelerates, imagine being able to anticipate rather than react to those signals. Success today and tomorrow belongs to dynamic businesses, and becoming dynamic demands a new breed of proactive, agile software.

Becoming dynamic starts with creating the optimal alignment of people assets, systems and data to maximize results.  Microsoft Dynamics is designed to unite the business and the IT organisation, the front office and the back office, and the business with its customers, partners and suppliers, breaking down barriers and eliminating friction to maximise results. Emerging as proactive and forward-looking, it connects people to their work, surfacing insights that enable better decisions, and guiding processes that optimise results.  Agile software empowers adaptation to changing market conditions.  Instead of a “system of record”, it delivers a “system of engagement and opportunity”.

At this Executive Briefing you will learn about the ‘agile software’ solutions in Microsoft’s portfolio– solutions which move beyond a “system of record” to a “system of engagement and opportunity” – solutions which will help you to become a more dynamic business – solutions which will help you to cut costs, save time and boost profits.

New Developers Conference Ltd (NDC), one of the world’s largest independent conferences in .NET and Agile development is coming to London.  The inaugural event will be held at the ICC suites at London’s ExCeL on December 4-6 2013.

This unique ‘festival for developers’ is set to transform the UK developer conference scene. Attendees can expect access to expert knowledge, fantastic networking and social events and a truly unforgettable experience.  A host of exclusive talks with leading international experts on .NET and Agile will include:

    • Jon Skeet, Java developer for Google in London, who plays with C# somewhat obsessively, in his free time.
    • Scott Allen, founder of OdeToCode LLC and a software consultant, from Baltimore, MD. Scott has 20 years of commercial software development experience across a wide range of technologies.
    • Mike Cohn, highly–respected and sought after trainer and speaker, in demand for agile and Scrum training around the globe
    • Rob Conery, co–founder of Tekpub.com, an online video learning resource for developers of all shapes and sizes, also one of the voices on This Developer’s Life podcast with Scott Hanselman.
    • Dominick Baier, associate consultant for German company Thinktecture. His focus is identity & access control protocols and APIs and how to apply them to real world software projects.

Jakob Bradford, Director NDC London, says: “As NDC London will be the first time NDC goes outside Oslo we will hold nothing back as we aim to create the best developer conference that London has ever seen – boosting the industry like a ‘vitamin injection’. Attendees can expect the same successful structure as NDC Oslo with brand new content. Bringing together developers and leading IT companies in the highly interactive Expo area for knowledge exchange, and an unparalleled networking opportunity.”

NDC London is set to attract more than 1,000 participants and its unique festive atmosphere and strong sense of community will generate opportunities for Programmers, Software Architects, Project Managers and IT Executives to network with a range of partners from leading IT companies. TechFire 9 – The Threat Landscape: What’s Myth? What’s Real?

    8-10am

Gibson Hotel, Dublin 1 (Beside The O2)

The threat landscape for ICT security has never been more complex, or difficult to discern. Hackers have the ability to target down to the level of individuals, and in these days of ubiquitous social media, such targeting has never been easier.”

    -Paul Hearns, Editor, ComputerScope

As security threats have evolved from simple mail worms to sophisticated, co-ordinated and well supported attacks, IT teams need to stay current with the defence and protection mechanisms available.

But there’s a lot of hype out there; how can you identify the real threats from those that are inflated by myth or misinformation?

This TechFire briefing will clear a path through this clutter, discussing the tools, techniques and knowledge necessary to ensure that your organisation stays safe by identifying not only the relevant threats, but also your weakest areas. By knowing where your business is vulnerable, you will be best informed to take the steps required, ensuring value and return on investment.
