Disaster Recovery is now a simple online service, says Canavan of KeepItSafe
Online back-up is an established and by now mainstream service, especially for SMEs. It dispenses with the need for tape backups in-house and the cumbersome management that goes with them while even RAID and disk-to-disk back-up requires off-site storage of daily or very recent copies. Because, of course, the whole point of backing up is so that you can or could restore in the event of an emergency or disaster.
With a managed back-up service online, all of the headaches are taken away by the service provider. KeepItSafe has been developing its service since 2003 and today we offer what we believe is the most advanced online backup and IT disaster recovery solution in the market anywhere, much less in Ireland. KeepItSafe DR provides businesses with an all-in-one solution designed to recover business servers and get enterprises back up and running in just minutes. That could range from relatively straightforward key file or directory recovery to complete systems including Microsoft Windows Servers, VMware vSphere, and ESX(i) servers.
“A wireless network needs to coexist with and merge into a wired network, so you need expertise in both areas to deliver an infrastructure that is built to provide optimal wireless performance”
It is the next generation solution for business continuity, back-up and recovery combined because it will fully protect not only traditional on-premises physical data and systems but virtual and even cloud resources. It also integrates seamlessly with Microsoft applications for complete disaster data protection. KeepItSafe DR also includes global deduplication that makes back-ups extremely efficient while lowering storage costs.
One easy example that is simple in concept but technically difficult behind the scenes is failover server rewind. We can restart from any point the client chooses to re-start an entire server. That is supported by the fact that our service does block-level snapshots with incremental forever data capture. The data is backed up to what we call a Virtual Standby Server, so it can be switched over to a virtual server at a moment’s notice.
That server restore can be done in minutes, certainly less than hours, and can also be to new resources, from bare metal on the client’s own kit or a virtual server spun up in minutes or to a hosted environment. It will be done in accordance with pre-agreed priorities, so critical applications and recent data first usually with all of the other elements following in an orderly way. Our normal standard is a four-hour maximum for less critical servers and data.
When you think about it, that feature or service alone makes the very idea of a physical standby site, as in the old days of disaster recovery, finally obsolete other than for specialised operations like banking or government or military. Fast recovery of essential data and systems gives the client a range of options.
Temporary transfer to rented resources, like a virtual private server, has the enterprise operational again in a very short time. Other elements of its recovery plan then have breathing space to be followed or changed without panic. In the event of something like a fire or flood, most companies these days will text their staff to stay at home or find somewhere to log on or just use mobile connectivity and await further instructions.
