Chinese Internet company Baidu has unveiled a new AI model called X1 and is making the accompanying chatbot available for free. Baidu claims this model is in some ways better than DeepSeek, a recently launched competitor with its own AI programme and chatbot.

Baidu was the first company in China to publicly develop a platform for advanced AI applications. Today, however, chatbots from other Chinese companies such as ByteDance (parent company of TikTok) and Moonshot AI are attracting more users.

DeepSeek, also based in China, recently increased competition by launching a chatbot that many believe performs as well as ChatGPT, but at a much lower price. Now Baidu is joining this AI race with X1. The company claims its latest model is just as effective as DeepSeek, but at half the cost. X1 is said to perform based on “understanding, planning, overthinking and evolving.”

The underlying model ERNIE 4.5, according to Baidu, has excellent multimodal understanding capability. This means that the platform can effectively process different types of data such as sounds, images and texts and convert them to each other. Baidu also states that ERNIE 4.5 is better at text generation than ChatGPT maker OpenAI’s new language model.
