Another Bitcoin developer denies he is Satoshi Nakamoto
Former Bitcoin developer Peter Todd denies that he is Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin, although that is suggested in a new HBO documentary.
In an e-mail to CoinDesk, Todd reveals that filmmaker Cullen Hoback, best known for identifying the person behind the QAnon conspiracy theory, is mistaken.
“Of course I’m not Satoshi,” Todd wrote. “It is ironic that a director also known for a documentary on QAnon has resorted to this.”
His name is revealed in Money Electric: the Bitcoin Mystery. As evidence, the documentary cites Todd’s interest in cryptography from a young age, his relationship with Adam Back (who e-mailed with Satoshi), his technical skills and Satoshis use of British/Canadian spellings.
The most tangible “evidence” is a 2010 public forum post in which Todd responded to one of Satoshis posts.
Nakamoto’s identity has remained unknown to date, although it has been claimed by several people.
Things have gone wrong before: a 64-year-old man vigorously denied years ago that he had anything to do with the digital currency after Newsweek proclaimed him as the creator of Bitcoin. He didn’t understand what the conversation with the journalist was about anyway, he told news agency AP, which had to treat him to lunch first.
Possibly the man behind the pseudonym is no longer alive: he owns 20% of all Bitcoins, but has never cashed them.
