Apple is negotiating with Google to incorporate its Gemini AI into the iPhoneas it works on a multimodla large language model of its own.

If the talks are successful about implementing its Gemini AI this would be bad news for Apple’s Siri digital personal assistant. Gemini’s abiliy to handle text, images and sound outstrips Siri’s comparatively modest feature set, potentially rendering it obsolete.

According to Bloomberg neither company will discuss details of the deal until next summer. This wouild be confirmed by CEO Tim Cook’s statement that his AI plans would be detailed at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference on 5 June.

It’s expected that iOS 18 will include AI-powered features developed by Apple, according to Bloomberg. However, larger AI tasks like long text or image generation could be licensed from another company.

The two tech giants already have a strategic partnership with each other. Google is the preferred provider of the Web search engine in Apple’s hardware. For that, it pays 36% of the advertising revenue coming in through Safari.

Last week, Apple researchers published a paper outlining their take on AI language models. In it, they focused on what foundations and design principles an LLM should be built on. Furthermore, they presented an outline of their own AI under the name MM1. In doing so, the researchers promised a system that can reason efficiently, context-dependently.
