After recently admitting delays in its artificial intelligence (AI) efforts, Apple is restructuring its management team.

The company has reportedly removed John Giannandrea, the previous head of AI, from overseeing Siri. Mike Rockwell, who was previously in charge of developing the Vision Pro headset, will now be in charge of Siri, reporting directly to Craig Federighi, Apple’s head of software.

These changes come after Apple announced that the improved Siri with AI features would be released later than originally expected. The new features had been mooted for this spring, but will now appear in the coming year.

Apple saw Siri as a powerful tool by giving it access to users’ personal information and enabling it to interact between different apps. For example, users could ask Siri when to leave to pick up a family member from the airport, and the software would independently gather the necessary information, such as flight data and traffic conditions.

Competing tech giants such as Google and Samsung are also developing similar AI features for their products and services. Amazon is preparing to offer an advanced AI version of its Alexa assistant in the US soon.

Apple has grouped its new AI offerings under the umbrella term Apple Intelligence. Currently, these capabilities include summarising and reformatting text, as well as generating emojis based on user descriptions. A rollout of the first Apple Intelligence features in the EU is scheduled for April.

Apple is emphasising AI features in its marketing campaign for the latest iPhone models.
