Alphabet may be forced to sell off Chrome browser – Bloomberg
The US Department of Justice wants to use the courts to force Google parent company Alphabet to divest its Chrome Internet browser. So reports news agency Bloomberg based on anonymous sources.
Chrome controls an estimated two-thirds of the global browser market.
Ownership of the world’s most popular Web browser is key to Google’s advertising business. It allows the company to track the behavior of logged-in users and use that data to show depersonalized ads.
Google says the Justice Department has “a radical agenda” that transcends the legal issues in this case.
Google shares fell 1.8% to $172.16 after the stock market closed.
Incidentally, the case was filed back under the first Trump administration and continued under President Biden. It is the most aggressive attempt to rein in a technology company since Washington unsuccessfully tried to break up Microsoft two decades ago.
It remains to be seen whether it will continue under Trump. The incoming presidence has promised to reform several departments and previously was not in favour of splitting up Google.
