AI does better at diagnosing and scores higher on empathy than doctors – study
An AI system trained to conduct medical conversations has matched or exceeded the performance of human doctors in talking to simulated patients and listing possible diagnoses based on patients’ medical histories according to a report in the journal Nature.
An experimental chatbot based on a large language model from Google has shown that it can match or exceed the skills of human doctors in diagnosing conditions based on patient history. AMIE (Articulate Medical Intelligence Explorer).
AMIE obtained an equal amount of information during medical interviews with actors simulating patients as human doctors and scored higher on empathy. The AI outperformed human doctors in 24 of 26 criteria for interview quality. Among these were politeness and explaining the condition and treatment. The system has unprecedented capacity for diagnostic dialogues and clinical history taking.
The use of AI in medicine is a complex task, where mimicking a physician’s ability to take and use a medical history for diagnosis is challenging.
Although AMIE is still experimental and far from clinical use, this development shows the immense potential of AI in health care. Not only in terms of diagnostic accuracy, but also in providing empathetic patient care.
