Carphone Warehouse to offer mobile service
Mobile device retailer Carphone Warehouse is launch a mobile service using Three’s network. The company has a similar arrangement in the UK with Vodafone under the TalkMobile brand.
Carphone Warehouse opened its Irish operation in 1996 and employs 700 people in 91 stores nationwide. The new service will create an additional 50 jobs in marketing, finance IT and tech support.
As part of Three’s takeover of O2’s Irish operation, the EU ruled that parent company Hitchison Whampoa would have to provide a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) arrangement with two competitors. In May it was announced UPC would also be entering the mobile space using Three’s network, creating a quad-play offering of TV, mobile, broadband and landline phone services.
Peter Scott, MD of Carphone Warehouse Ireland, said: “This new partnership with Three opens an exciting new chapter for Carphone Warehouse and for our customers. It allows us to expand our business and create 50 new jobs in a continued challenging retail environment. Carphone Warehouse has always prided itself in offering our customers the most up-to-the-minute technology and connectivity together with world class customer service.”
Carphone Warehouse’s Irish operation reported sales of €106 million in 2013.
