Google ends support for older Nest thermostats, no more new models for Europe
Google is saying goodbye to three of the oldest models of the Nest Learning Thermostat, which came to market more than a decade ago.
These devices will disappear from the Nest and Google Home apps later this year, no longer receive software updates and lose smart features such as Home/Away Assist and Google Assistant integration. However, basic features will remain: users can still adjust temperature, modes, schedules and settings directly on the device itself.
For affected users in the US and Canada, Google is offering a discount on an upgrade to the latest version: the Nest Learning Thermostat (fourth generation). In the US, users get $130 off (recommended retail price: $279.99), in Canada even $160 off (recommended retail price: $379.99).
Google sees no future for new Nest thermostats in Europe for the time being. According to the company, the variety of heating systems in European homes is too complex. “The combination of varying hardware and software requirements makes it difficult to build a universal solution,” Google said.
In Europe, Google does continue to sell the third generation of the Nest from 2015 and 2018’s Nest Thermostat E, while supplies last. These models will continue to be supported in the Nest and Home apps and will continue to receive security updates.
This announcement comes just weeks after Google already said goodbye to two other Nest products, replacing them with third party alternatives. It is now an annual tradition at the tech company to scrap products while new ones are launched.
