Social media company X, formerly known as Twitter, is paying $10 million (€9.5 million) to settle a lawsuit, brought against it by US President Donald Trump.

Trump then sued Twitter, and former CEO Jack Dorsey, in federal court in San Francisco after the social network deleted his account following the riots on 6 January 2021 when a mob stormed the US Capitol, in protesting the election of Democrat Joe Biden as President. Trump has allowed claims that his election loss was a result of fraud to foment ever since.

Twitter argued it had removed President Trump’s account as there was a risk that he would incite further violence. Trump argued that being removed was a violation of his First Amendment right to free speech.

As the legal actions played out Trump founded his own microblogging platform, Truth Social, where he posts regularly to a devoted right wing following.

Trump got his account back following the takeover of Twitter by Elon Musk who subsequently renamed it X.

In 2022, Trump lost his case in front of a San Francisco judge, but he appealed. Now Musk’s company is settling the lawsuit once and for all.

Musk and Trump have been in close contact since the presidential election. Most notably, Musk is serving in an advisory capacity as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) – an organisation that has no standing in law.
