Ulster University has wrapped up a £6 million (€6.9 million) digital infrastructure upgrade across its four Northern Ireland campuses in partnership with local IT provider eir evo UK. Recognised as one of the top 30 UK universities in The Guardian University Guide, Ulster University now ranks sixth in StudentCrowd’s Top 20 for wireless networks and internet services in 2023.

The upgrade benefits around 33,000 staff and students across campuses in Belfast, Coleraine, Derry-Londonderry, and Jordanstown Sports Village. It ensures widespread, high-speed wireless connectivity for educational roaming networks, cybersecurity, and media studies.

The infrastructure includes a secure, multi-gigabit HPE Aruba wired and wireless network delivered by eir evo. This technology, part of a series of contracts transforming the university’s digital landscape, was inaugurated at the new Belfast campus in September, covering the entire 75,000m2 facility. The HPE Aruba 100Gb wired and multi-gigabit wireless network provides secure and reliable access to multi-gigabit internet speeds.

Terence Nicholl, head of infrastructure and operations, Ulster University, said: “Delivering on our commitment to bring world class teaching, to transform lives, open minds and develop the skills needed for a growing local economy, this groundbreaking digital investment is crucial to the University’s success, enabling a new level of interconnectivity across all our campuses in delivering ubiquitous and secure internet access right across our estate.”

Matt McCloskey, sales & marketing director, eir evo UK, said: “Our contract with Ulster University delivers the most reliable and secure wireless network available, benefiting thousands of people every day and we’re proud to be a trusted partner to deliver its needs, providing instant, seamless connectivity for users across all its campuses.”
