AWS gets green light to construct three data centres in North Dublin
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has received the green light by Fingal County Council to build three new data centres in North Dublin.
This decision comes despite opposition from environmental groups Friends of the Earth, Not Here Not Anywhere, and Gluaiseacht. Concerns have been raised due to fears of increased emissions and carbon lock-in associated with the project.
Several objectors have said that other data centres already account for too large a share of power and the small number of new jobs created does not justify the amount of carbon dioxide that the centres will produce.
After granting a seven-year planning permission, the council concluded that the construction of the three data centres align with European and Government policy. The council stated the amount of electricity generated by the renewable energy projects must be equal to or greater than the electricity requirements of the data centres in operation. Furthermore, determining that the project would not have a detrimental impact on the environment.
The build is due to start later this year and expected to come online in 2025 and 2026.
According to the Environmental Impact Statement, the campus will eventually consume 219.7MW of power and produce an annual 607,523 tonnes of carbon dioxide. The Government has proposed tighter regulations as it aims to achieve climate goals by 2030.
A spokesperson for AWS said: “The proposed development represents a significant investment that will create additional direct, indirect and induced economic and employment benefits, in addition to those that have already been generated by AWS.”
