Thirty-nine teams battled it out in the Regional Finals of the F1 in Schools Competition on 15-16 March in Griffith College Dublin to qualify for 12 places in the national finals to take place on 26 April.
Powered in Ireland by the Irish Computer Society and supported by Discover Science and Engineering, F1 in Schools is a global competition that challenges second level school students to design, build and race model Formula 1 cars powered by air compressed canisters. The teams are judged on car speed, as well as supporting evidence of their design, verbal presentation and display stand.
The winning team will go on to represent Ireland in the World Championships to take place in 2012 and compete against 32 other countries.
"The regional finals are the first real opportunity for them to pitch their cars against those of their competitors, after spending months on the design and testing of their cars." said Jim Friars, CEO of the Irish Computer Society. "It’s always great fun to watch the F1 model cars power away from the grid down the track and to witness the camaraderie between the teams as they compete on and off the track with their eye-catching displays. The innovation and talent displayed here today is a credit to their schools and communities."
The following teams were selected: Rapido, Royal School, Cavan; Synergy Racing, Presentation College, Carlow; Team Raptor, Presentation College, Carlow; Bolt Racing, Presentation Secondary School, Kilkenny; Elite Racing, Presentation College, Carlow; Enigma F1, Dundalk Grammar School; Quantum Racing, Dundalk Grammar School; Team Hornet, Killina Presentation School, Offaly; Team Tachyon, Templeogue College, Dublin; Team Tempo, St Paul’s College, Raheny; Tiger Shark, Carlow Vocational School; SuperTurbos, Castleblayney College, Monaghan.
