Inside story: Bryan Conneely, Jet.com
What do you do?
I am the Dublin team lead for the Jet.com pricing team. We are responsible for calculating the price for everything that is available to purchase on Jet.com. We develop pricing strategies, and we design, develop and run the computer systems to execute these strategies. The team is split between Dublin and Hoboken, New Jersey, and I lead the Dublin side.
Together, we develop new pricing algorithms and data platforms to deliver reliable and accurate prices for our products. I am also involved in the technical development of our Dublin office – organising internal training and community events around computer programming and cloud technology.
Describe your typical working day?
For me, the day starts at nine. I catch up on any overnight developments from Hoboken before we have our morning team meeting at 9:30, where we discuss what we want to do for the day. After this short meeting, we settle into our different projects. I am currently working on a new data pipeline for our team.
We continue until lunchtime, and after lunch, the Hoboken team members start to arrive at their office. We have a group meeting to coordinate our work and code releases. Then we return to project work until about six. Throughout the day, I could have different meetings on operations, project development and team development. So, every day tends to be a little bit different.
What are your qualifications?
I have a BSc in Information Technology and an MSc in applied computer engineering, both from NUIG. These were terrific degrees that gave me the confidence to perform in my different roles. Over the years, I have picked up a few vendor certificates. Continuous learning is an important for a successful career in software engineering.
Tell us about your previous work experience?
I have worked as a software engineer since I graduated. I performed in many roles in different industries before I found myself in a financial modelling role for a London hedge fund. From there, I became a technical lead for an odds-compilation team in a bookmaker’s risk department. This fast-paced, high-energy environment prepared me to assume the responsibility to be a team lead in Jet.com.
What is the best thing about your job?
It must be the culture of trust and encouragement available to you to get the job done. Everyone is incredibly supportive, and wants you to succeed. This culture is a core part of Jet.com, which began as a handful of guys in a basement, and grew into the company it is today. It is such a positive environment; I was surprised how much you can achieve when everyone is pulling in the same direction.
And the biggest challenge?
The challenge has always been to attract top engineering talent. And although Dublin is very competitive, I am convinced that with our very strong tech, combined with our great culture, and a city centre location, we can offer a compelling proposition to any candidate.
What advice would you give someone considering applying for a job with you?
We’re always on the lookout for people who love to learn, who enjoy working as part of a team and who aren’t afraid to make mistakes. Our tech stack is medley of cloud, devops, microservices and functional programming. If this sounds interesting to someone, whether they already know it, or really want to learn it, then Jet is a great place to work. It is full of collaborative and ambitious people who want to grow.
