The option to hide the blue checkmark on Twitter, formerly known as X, will soon disappear for Premium users.

The blue checkmark was revamped in November 2023 under the new ownership of Elon Musk. Unlike the previous verification process, which was granted to accounts of public figures and organisations to ensure authenticity, the blue checkmark was changed to indicate a paid subscribtion to Twitter Premium.

The Premium service offers several benefits, including longer tweets, the ability to hide likes and generate revenue from viral posts. However, the addition of a pay wall for verification caused controversy, with many users criticising the system as unjustified and elitist.

In addition to paid verification, Twitter also automatically added a blue checkmark to accounts with more than 2,500 verified followers and/or those still deemed “notable” by the platform. This has caused confusion and dissatisfaction among some users who do not want the checkmark. Consequently, they often choose to hide it. The exact date when the option to hide the blue checkmark will disappear has not yet been announced.
