In an ultra-short video presentation of about half an hour at an unusual time, Apple announced new iPads as expected: the iPad Pro and iPad Air 2024.

Instead of mini-LED, Apple opted for OLED in the Pro models. The screen of the largest iPad will be 0.1″ larger, going from 12.9″ to 13″.

The Pro has also gotten a lot thinner (5.3mm for 11″ and 5.1mm for 13″) and there is a new colour: ‘space black’.

The iPad Pro 2024 will be the first to get a new M4 chip. Apple would like to highlight the AI features of this chip for the iPad Pro.

The FaceTime camera is now on the long side, so you no longer have to look sideways while video calling.

The iPad Air now comes with 13″ Liquid Retina display for the first time, but is powered by an M2 chip. The iPad Air has the same flat-sided design as its predecessor. It is available in four colours: blue, pink, starlight and space gray.

The 11″ iPad Pro is available starting at €1,219 (Wi-Fi model) and €1,469 (Wi-Fi + cellular), and the 13″ iPad Pro is available starting at €1,569 (Wi-Fi model) and €1,819 (Wi-Fi + cellular).

The new 11″ and 13″ iPad Air are available in blue, purple, starlight and space gray, with a choice of 128GB, 256GB, 512GB or 1TB of storage capacity. The 11″ iPad Air is available from €729 (Wi-Fi model) and €899 (Wi-Fi + Cellular). The 13″ iPad Air is available from €979 (Wi-Fi) and €1,149 (Wi-Fi + Cellular model).

The tablet market could use a boost. According to Canalys, shipments grew by only 1% in the first quarter compared to the previous year. Shipments reached 33.7 million units after four consecutive quarters of year-on-year declines.

Apple retained first place with 35.6 percent market share, but actually fell 13.9% year-on-year. It was followed by Samsung (20.2%), Huawei (8.1%), Lenovo (6.3%) and Amazon (6.1%). Interestingly, Huawei was the best performer with an annualised growth rate of 70.2%.

Apple reportedly plans to launch a foldable device with a 20.3″ screen in 2025. This may be the first foldable MacBook.

Rumours of a foldable iPhone have been circulating for some time. Apple analyst Jeff Pu predicts that Cupertino will launch its first foldable device as early as 2025.

Pu expects Apple to start mass production of the foldable MacBook by the end of 2025.
